I'm not a fly lady, but I did give mellow ma excellent moving advice last year

however the bloody search facility is broken so I can't find it (gah)

Think it went along the lines of:-

  1. Go round house bubble wraping and packing ornaments/pictures/mirrors.
  1. Kitchen next - pack away as much as you can bear (Crockery etc) as well as all your cupboards
  1. Choose anohter room - pack - do it room by room
  1. When doind bedrooms, pack away as many clothes as you can, in suitcases if you have them, leaving about a weeks worth of clothes out - yes, you'll be washing and wearing and sick of the sight of htem, but it will really save time later.
  1. On moving day have a roll of bin liners handy for duvets/pillows/pyjamas
  1. Also on moving day, ahve a box for kettle, tea, coffee etc
  1. Go through freezer & store cupboards now, and MEAL PLAN to use up the food.

i have moved before but that was from a 2 bed flat with one DC, we now have 4 DC and a bigger house - i'm scared!!

also contemplating chucking it all to save packing but unfortunatley i haven't won the lottery so i can't!!

good idea to do it room by room, i just don't know where to put the boxes either when they are pack so that the DC to muck about with them!

What mama g said

MamaG · 22/02/2008 14:59

do you have a garage? If not, they n eed to be sealed adn left in teh rooms (maybe your bedroom could be dumping ground!)

Have a BIG sort out this weekend, clothing, toys, make up, books, CDs, everything. Then you'll know you're only taking whaty ou actually want, not the stuff that just gets carted from house to house!

sparklesandwine · 22/02/2008 15:08

no garage and our bedroom is up 2 flights of stairs - lol at least i'll be fit

Sparkles, I have done this sixty four times and preparing for sixty fifth move so here goes:

Tidy the house first as best as. When it is clean and tidy things are easier to sort. Do it a little bit at a time.
Packing:-I used to be anal about it but gave up about 20 flits ago. Lob everything into cardboard boxes...I have not even broken wine glasses this way.
If it is really valuable then carry it on your lap.
Last box to pack should have the kettle, mugs, milk, tea etc so as it is first to be unpacked.
Dont wash the children's duvets or pillows- they need their familiar 'smell'.
Bribe/bully/wheedle as much help as you can on the day for lifting stuff. Large men will do almost anything for beers and hot dogs.
Most importantly don't fret. It will all work out ok. Good luck in your new home

sparklesandwine · 22/02/2008 15:44

Thanks JP i'm already fretting about it and not sleeping

I take it your in the forces and not just moving for the fun of it!!

No not in the forces- my family just liked moving (31 moves with them) and when I left home I did not know how to settle.

sparklesandwine · 22/02/2008 16:06

lol wow that really suprises me! tis good to move though blow away the cobwebs and all that

no wonder your a dab hand at it now!

This might sound insane but if you visualise your being in the new house then the move seems LOADS easier.
A change is good though!
