Wool duvet

Hi

Has anyone here for a wool duvet at home? A friend recommended one recently as being excellent for keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. I'm peri-menopausal so that would be handy. But I'm not too sure whether to take the leap as it's a bit investment for me...

Yes. Had one for a couple of years now. It's awesome in winter. Absolutely bloody awesome. No need for hot water bottles or electric blankets. Cosy within seconds of getting into bed.
Also menopausal here. In this heat it's basically no worse than any other bed covering. Can't say it keeps me cool because I basically have been uncovered in bed through this heatwave. But it doesn't make me overheat in the cooler early hours when I might pull part of it over me again.
Cannot stress what a game changer it is in winter. Don't need to have the heating on all night or anything like that. To be honest, our heating goes off about 8 pm and the bedrooms get colder.

Also, ours is a factory seconds from Baavet.

The wool room have outlets - there is one in derbyshire near chatsworth. Might be worth seeing if theres any more as you can get 50% off

How easy is it to wash a wool duvet though?

AuntieJune · 18/06/2023 16:28

I'd be scared of moths!

Nowconcerned · 19/06/2023 17:45

I'd be terrified of moths! They have already eaten my wool carpets. Thankfully I had synthetic duvets!

SoosanCarter · 19/06/2023 17:51

Another vote for Baavet. Just lovely. Soft and warm.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 19/06/2023 17:54

I bought 3 super king duvets from Devon duvets. Love them.

TR888 · 23/06/2023 00:45

Another vote from me. They're light yet warm. I use mine all year one :)

I also have a factory seconds wool duvet from Baavet and I love it, it's really cosy in winter but doesn't overheat me in warmer weather. Nothing wrong with it as a second, it's just a slightly different weight to their standard duvets. Their instructions say not to wash it but to hang it out on a sunny day to air and let the sun get to it. No problems with moths yet and I've had it a long time. It was an investment at the time but has been well worth it

We have occasionally moth problems in our bedrooms- particularly dd. We all have a Baavet seconds. Never had an issue with moths.

AnnaMagnani · 25/06/2023 14:15

I have one and all I'll say is that if you are having a hot flush, which duvet it is doesn't matter.

However I do notice it when I'm away as with the wool, you don't get sweaty.

WildFlowerBees · 25/06/2023 14:17

Devon duvets, feel amazing I've been converted from a down.

Brownsauce83 · 25/06/2023 15:08

We have a Baavet second too - absolutely love it.

garfieldeatscake · 25/06/2023 15:37

Pros and cons:
Make sure you get one with a cotton covering and not a synthetic mix as the wool won't be able to function properly.
Pros:
Weight to warmth ratio is every bit as good as down without the cruelty of down.
Wool is a natural fibre so a very good insulator.
Easy to wash and line dries quickly.
No moths!
It's a very environmentally friendly material.

Cons:
It can be an absolute bugger putting it in and staying in a duvet cover, as it tends to get more crumpled and move more than hollow fibre or down. This can be remedied by getting a duvet with poppers attached to the corners, and a popper cover.

MrParticular · 05/08/2023 18:25

Yes, we've had a few now! Not all great.
I agree with a lot of what garfieldeatscake said.
Our first was from devon duvets a while ago. It was warm and cosy but was really, really heavy. Unfortunetely we couldn't return it (costly error!) so it gets used in the coldest winter months only and it's good for that but too heavy for most of the year.
We then looked at the much cheaper ones from The Wool Room but they have the nylon/plastic intercasing so that kind of ruins the idea of breathable wool and I'm not sure I'd ever really trust a company that always seems to have a 50% sale on!
Eventiually we got one from the Wool Company and it massively improved the darling wife's sleep quality and mine too. They aren't cheap but it seemed to be good so I called them moaned about the price and they offered me a 12% discount. Not a lot really but every little helps!! (sorry). The lady on the phone was lovely not at all salesy and she said that the processes was all very sustainable and not cruel to sheep. Anyway we got it and it is lovely! Warm and cosy but never sweaty. Really high quality stitching and cotton casing and - not heavy. I was so impressed I got one for my 89 year-old mother and she's sleeping better too. I was thinking to get one for our daughter but not just yet!!

They do seem nice at The Wool Company and talk about sustainability a lot. Not sure how much is greenwash but worth checking out. https://www.thewoolcompany.co.uk/collections/wool-duvets
