How to get poo out of rug?

(NC as I frequently do and can assure you that I have no interest in fecal matter Envy < not envy)

It was crawled through the rug before I realised. I have cleaned all I can see (but it's a brown, Kashan medium pile rug) and where I can remember DC crawling so far. I'm not finished and will need to do the rest of the carpet for peace of mind but I had to leave DC crying whilst scrubbing and couldn't give anymore time to it immediately.

So far I wiped the excess poo away, used a high concentration of zoflora to scrub the poo areas with it and then the crawl route and some of the surrounding areas I just went over with a cloth and zoflora solution. I've ventilated to dry it out a bit.

I'm going to go over it again but any other tips?

Get a new rug.

Really? Am I destined to never get it out properly?

What sort of poo is it? Is it DC's or animal poo? I deal with poo with either bleach or the bin (! )but being as how it's a brown rug the bleach will take the colour out! I couldn't have my dc crawling through poo germs.....sorry not much help!

Beluowens · 07/06/2023 11:03

Just a quick thought, would steaming it (with a clothes steamer) kill the germs ?as essentially its water that's come to boiling point and turned to steam...or would it damage the rug?

how big is the rug? can you take it to a dry cleaners or hire one of those carpet cleaner machines

newtb · 07/06/2023 11:14

Put it in a bin bag and in the freezer do at least you'd be picking off solide 'lumps'? Might work......

Rinkydinkydoodle · 07/06/2023 11:20

Enzyme spray! It’s meant for pet owners but does a great job on taking any vile smell away, doesn’t only work on pet shit, also good for baby poo, vomit and scrubbing round the pan on toilet floors. Do a test on an inconspicuous area, you do get ones that are for carpet and upholstery. I’d probably go in with a comb and nail brush. Don’t envy you😳

NetballHoop · 07/06/2023 11:22

We have a Vax for this kind of thing. I'm sure you can hire similar machines.

That is genius and horrifying at the same time.

If finances allow, get a fabric spot cleaner.

I got one because of my filthy children two years ago and it’s been a lifesaver with carpets, car seats, the fabric sofas etc.

Also voting for get a new rug

Probably too late now, but I always use a spoon to scrape vomit/ dog poo/ spills from carpet. Wiping with a cloth tends to rub it in, but a spoon will scrape the majority from the surface.

Had this with an antique-style carpet so all natural colours. Removed as much as possible with kitchen towels without rubbing it in, then carefully dabbed at the remainder with cloths soaked in wool detergent and water. Removed the detergent residue by pouring carbonated water on it - no kidding, I surprised myself it actually works! Dried the carpet on top of a thick towel overnight and disinfected through exposure to sunlight.

It was the baby kind, no solid bits at all. I can't see it or smell anything at all but I hate the idea of germs lingering.

I've used bio laundry detergent and hot water solution with a drop of the antibacterial Dettol laundry stuff after the zoflora stuff and dried it a bit with the window open. I've covered it with bicarbonate of soda and left it to soak up for 25 minutes then hoovered.

It's a very large rug and so bloody lovely to play with the kids on. DC isn't even potty training yet, probably not for a while and I don't really want to buy a new rug that will be victim to this kind of thing at a later date.

We can't use a big rug doctor machine as it didn't pull up enough water out of it the last time, despite removing water 3 times and it left behind a horrible damp smell after ventilating. It took about 3 weeks.

I feel like I've only really got 2 options:

  1. replace it, perhaps with a totter and tumble play mat
  2. get a spot cleaner and use a good antibacterial carpet cleaner on it
