maybe you're not putting it on right? I've never had problems with it.

Bluestocking · 17/02/2008 20:30

What's your secret, LR?

themoon66 · 17/02/2008 20:32

Can we re-title this thread 'bath and shower sealant'? The shower upstairs has leaked so much, my sitting room ceiling looks like a mosaic.

southeastastra · 17/02/2008 20:33

do you fill it up and sit in a bath while you do it lucinda. dp tried that but it didn't work. does he have to stay in for hours until it sets?

Do you do it with the bath filled with water? Mine is the same.

SlightlyMadSecretSoundWinner · 17/02/2008 20:35

Right.

Prepare your surfaces fully

Clean with meths to get rid of residue

Fill bath with water

Apply sealant, take off excess with a designed tool. They really are fab

Empty water after at least 24hrs.

Bluestocking · 17/02/2008 20:36

What does "prepare your surfaces fully" actually entail?

Jennster · 17/02/2008 20:37

Ha! The dick of a plumber said it was bollards doing that.

BettySpaghetti · 17/02/2008 20:38

DP recommends removing the old sealant using silicon eater, fill the bath with water and then apply a sealant by Dow Corning. Smooth it off using washing up liquid as a lubricant on your finger.

Although it should dry in an hour or two its best left for as long as possible before using the bath/shower (I think we left our shower for 24hrs).

SlightlyMadSecretSoundWinner · 17/02/2008 20:42

We cut away most of old sealant with a stanley knife. Then use a commercial sealant remover to get rid of residue

Then clean with meths

I have used a kitchen knife to smooth befoere which worked great, but the tool really is better.

You really need to press the sealant onto teh surfaces as you smooth so it sticks to surfaces.

Notice that I keep saying I. It is a womans job in this house.

Ours has lasted about 5yrs, and is just ready to redo, but we are planning on gutting ba\throom iminantly

southeastastra · 17/02/2008 21:26

i'll try the dow thing, i've spent years cutting away with it with a knife and white spiriting it.

i think we're being sold a product that does not work

I use unibond or whatever is on the shelves.

I think meths is better than white spirit but I don't know why I think that
