What is wrong with my glasses? Pic attached.

My glasses are all completely wrecked by my dishwasher. We have a fancy water softener installed with block salt, and use all in one dishwasher tablets. Where am I going wrong??

Could be limescale - try soaking in vinegar
If its etching of the glass then that can't be removed

Summerslimtime · 02/05/2023 19:14

But the water softener stops limescale?? Isn't that right?

I never put glasses in a dishwasher because of this. I've no idea of what it is.

Summerslimtime · 02/05/2023 19:16

It's a recent thing. I can't be bothered to hand-wash them. It's really annoying.

Apparently overly softened water can speed up etching of the glasses. Have you adjusted the softener in your machine to take account of having an actual water softener installed?

dementedpixie · 02/05/2023 19:30

Try wiping one with vinegar just to see if it's limescale related

I don't know what this means! 😁

You should be able to adjust your dishwasher softener setting to take account of the your water being soft already e.g. I'm in Scotland and have soft waters I reduce the softener setting in my machine. If you are in a hard water area you would increase the setting to make the water softer

Google your make and model to find out how to adjust the settings

Same here. We always hand wash glasses.

Summerslimtime · 02/05/2023 19:38

OK, thank you so much.

The vinegar does not remove the marks.

Have you run out of rinse aid

thistimelastweek · 02/05/2023 19:53

@Doggymummar I would also try adding rinse aid .
The 3 in 1 tablets aren't always enough.

baddecisions11 · 02/05/2023 20:07

Rinse aid works wonders!

Summerslimtime · 02/05/2023 20:29

OK, but I thought the softener alone was enough! I'll try the rinse aid. Thank you.

I looked into this a few years ago and if my googling was right then it's permanent damage to the glass.
Basically the prolonged high temperatures from repeatedly putting glass into the dishwasher give it this cloudy appearance. I find it happens more with some kinds of glasses than others.

I don't put any expensive/ nice glasses in the dishwasher any more, only the cheaper ones I'm happy to replace after a few years.

Mbop · 02/05/2023 20:55

Are they going in the bottom and spinning around and that's what's causing it?

Summerslimtime · 02/05/2023 20:58

No they are top shelf.

It’ll be the lack of rinse aid. Mine go like that without it, despite the 4 in 1 tablets.

fizzyfood · 07/05/2023 08:37

If the salt runs out in my dishwasher then I get this I also use fairy platinum and have no problems

sevenbyseven · 07/05/2023 08:40

They've effectively been "scoured" and the cloudiness is permanent. Apparently this is less likely to happen with gel dishwasher tablets than the hard/powder type which are more abrasive.

I now wash all our good glasses by hand.

Bonbon21 · 07/05/2023 08:49

Read recently that scrunching up tin foil into a ball and leaving on the top rack makss glasses shine! Havent tried it yet!

sevenbyseven · 07/05/2023 09:47

According to the Finish website, corrosion is more likely in soft water areas, and it's worth checking your water softener settings:

Reasonableadjustments · 07/05/2023 09:49

I used to get this when I only used the all in one tabs.

I now add salt and rinse aid and I never get this anymore, so I'd try adding rinse aid (as you have a water softener)

MarissaG · 07/05/2023 09:50

It happens to my cheap Nutella glasses! But not my tempered ones. And also much better if I use a gel rather than powder.

JeannieAlogy · 07/05/2023 09:53

I've had a few go like this in the past, but only after many repeats of them being in the dishwasher.
I'm in a hard water area and use both rinseaid and dishwasher salt (my machine flashes lights at me annoyingly if there isn't enough).
