Terrible smell from washing machine

I have notice a terrible smell when the washing machine is running. The clothes are coming out smelling fresh and clean. I've cleaned the filter and run a service wash. What else could it be?

Is it coming from the washing machine and not around it? Not a dead mouse under the machine that’s releasing smells when the machine gets warm?

I have very shallow drains (very old house!) and when I run the washing machine, stale water that's been sitting in U bends gets pushed up the plugholes of the downstairs bathroom bath and any sinks. Could it be that? If it's the general smell of 'drains' it could be.

O god, I hope not!

It does smell of sewage.

If its a fishy type smell, it will be the electrics. I had this, and when I checked the plug it was burning out and would have set fire eventually! Please check this!

Could be the drains then. I've sort of learned to live with mine, but trying to keep any U bends clear helps (I often put Zoflora down all the plugholes to help with the smell). You could always try this and see if it work?

The electrics are fine. I have just seen some water coming up through the sink, so think it might be that. Will try some drain cleaner. I usually just put the machine on and don't go in until it's finished, so hadn't noticed that.
