DYSON advice...

Please help! Hoover died and urgently need to replace. We want a Dyson- not at upright as no tall cupboard space, must be good on wooden floors, not too noisy or fussy and not too expensive! Have found bargains in the DC19 and DC08 but can anyone personally recommend one. Also what is this HEPA all about and what's the 'i' mean after the DC08 etc? Have pestered DH for Dyson for ages and just worried about making the wrong buy so all advice welcome. Thanks you in advance!

we've bought 2 x dysons in the past 10 years the latest one DC14 lasting 2 1/2 years! I have just bought This Bissell which seems excellent value for money at £100 - it has all positive reviews on amazon and is prices there at £246 for seemingly the same model?!?! I couldn't take the risk of forking out another £200-300+ for something that hasn't IMHO gone the distance

Furball · 13/02/2008 15:53

meaning the dyson hasn't gone the distance

McDreamylove · 13/02/2008 15:54

I have had 2 Dysons in 6 years and I think they are crap!

tissy · 13/02/2008 15:57

we've had a DCO8 animal for at least 3 yrs. Went wrong once, phoned helpline, and engineer came out next day, exactly when he said he would. Fixed it for free, even though clearly not in warranty, and also replaced a broken stair tool for nothing.

Cleans well.

No complaints.

tissy · 13/02/2008 15:59

meant to add: Dysons come up very well in Which? tests for cleaning, but don't make best buy because they have a tendency not to be reliable. We haven't found that.

HEPA filters are supposed to be good for asthmatics, as they remove particles from the air which can cause wheezing.

Raffaella · 13/02/2008 16:01

Miele far, far better than Dyson for roundabout the same price.

McDreamylove · 13/02/2008 16:01

I have heard that Henry's are good but I have had not experience of them. We are returning to the UK in the summer without our Dyson so I will be on the look out for recommendations!!

cmotdibbler · 13/02/2008 16:03

Dyson will come out and fix your hoover for 50 quid flat fee, no matter what is wrong. The one we had blew its motor up - came out day after being rung, fixed it, cleaned it all out, new filters etc.

Not if you live in Cyprus!!! Or maybe they will!!

JFly · 13/02/2008 16:18

Um, I hate my Dyson. It's heavy (but I have the upright DC04) and unreliable. I really want to get a Miele. When I bought mine (4 years ago), it didn't have a 5 year warranty. Perhaps they are finding that they break down so often that they need to offer 5 years? Dunno, wouldn't buy another one.

MamaG · 13/02/2008 16:22

I have hte Animal one and its great

rebelmum1 · 13/02/2008 16:39

I hate my dyson it's heavy and not hard wearing at all bits drop off it and break, I'd recommend a Henry.

springlamb · 13/02/2008 19:21

I love my Dysons. Always have the uprights. TBH the older (now cheaper models) are better IMO. They are heavy but you get used to it. Mine have a hard life as I need to go over the main downstairs living areas daily due to large hairy dog (about 8 mins EVERY day).
Maybe that would explain why I have gone through 4 Dysons in the last 13 years. I don't rate their longevity but their performance whilst they are alive is great.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 13/02/2008 19:24

My dad used to repair cleaners for a living. He wouldn't entertain a Dyson.

Yes they will come and fix it - but TBH it shouldn't be breaking down in the first place - he sold Henrys (and the rest of his family) and rarely got them back in for repair.

bluefox · 13/02/2008 19:41

I liked my Dyson at first because of its suction (now 2 yrs old) but now it has lost all its suction (even though I do clean the filter thingy). Also I was never really happy with the hose thing for the stairs because it is such a faff to get out. I am thinking about replacing it with a Miele following good reviews on here) but not sure that I can be bothered with bags again - they seem so expensive.

Onlyaphase · 13/02/2008 19:47

I love my upright Dyson animal - I really didn't want to get it as I was sick of my Dysons breaking, but this one is just great, no problems after 3 years. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and hoover at least daily. Thought about a Miele but the bags would prove too expensive.

noddyholder · 13/02/2008 19:48

The miele is great but the bags are 13.99 now

TheJen · 13/02/2008 22:17

oh no totally confused now. This is too much for my postnatal brain
