Got a tip for you if your tea mugs come out of the dishwasher stained ...

We always had this problem. We like our tea made with a Yorkshire tea bag in a mug and brewed long and strong. But our mugs never came out of the d/w clean, even on a 60 degree wash programme.

So ... (are you gripped yet?) ... after reading threads on MN assuring us that the Eco programme costs less in terms of heat and electricity, even though it runs longer, we have switched to the Eco wash and honestly everything comes out cleaner AND drier. The tea mugs are white again, it's so satisfying.

Give it a go!

Milton in the cup, just a drop, top up with water. Stand for 20 mins, rinse and dry. If it's good enough for baby stuff, it is fine for mugs

I use Milton's

We used Milton too until we got a new dishwasher. It's great stuff.

Milton is your friend here.

God I’d completely forgotten about the time I drank bleach. Another time nail polish remover 🤦‍♀️

You would be amazed. I'm not suggesting people knock back a litre of weedkiller straight from the carton without realising, but we are talking putting bleach into cups. I've had one dead toddler and a surprisingly large number of accidentally poisoned adults. A small amount of diluted bleach in a mug won't kill an adult but you only need a tiny amount to cause an alkaline burn to the mouth/oesophagus and potentially leave you peg-fed for life.

Only hard scrubbing makes diff here

burgledinParis · 29/03/2023 18:42

Magic eraser! Easy, fast, no fuss.

@LindorDoubleChoc Have you been noticing that the tea in Yorkshire has changed a bit? More powdery? Also, have your bags been splitting a lot?

LindorDoubleChoc · 25/04/2023 20:28

I've used a tiny bit of bleach and cold water in a mug to get rid of tea stains. But isn't it just easier to put them in the dishwasher and forget about them because they'll come out clean? That's the whole point of this thread - it can be a one-step process.

Bicarb and hot water, leave it to get cold. Laundry stain remover also works (the powdered stuff), as does one of those abrasive plastic scrubby things, if you don't have a dishwasher.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 26/04/2023 10:47

This is nonsense OP. I drink tea every day. If I wash up by hand the tea mugs sometimes get stained but never if I use my dishwasher
You must look after a dishwasher properly using salts and rinse aid and keeping it clean and it will never leave stains like the ones you are talking about.

ichundich · 26/04/2023 10:50

Mine only come out stained if the salt is low / empty or the filter needs cleaning.

Diversion · 07/05/2023 22:03

Milton, just had a new kitchen though and will see how the new dishwasher copes with tea marks in the cups. It seems to me that some mugs just stain more than others, my work mug for instance gets washed daily, same tea bags but stains really badly and not far from home so the water cannot be too much different.

My mother doesn't have a dishwasher and drinks lots of tea. She soaks them in denture tablets to clean them!

I stick one on the mug with hot water and leave one overnight

Some mugs don't need it and never stain but I don't know which till I buy them

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/05/2023 09:57

Astonish paste (I haven't tried the cup cleaner but I've seen it advertised)

On a damp cloth , twist the cloth round inside the cup , takes seconds.

No nasty bleachy taste , not animal tested .

whineybing · 08/05/2023 10:06

I have porcelain mugs rather than stoneware, they are easier to clean. I use a Flash Magic Eraser, it really cleans them (and stained teaspoons) quickly and easily with no scrubbing and no nasty chemicals.

LindorDoubleChoc · 08/05/2023 12:16

I'm loving all the tips on here - Milton, bleach, flash eraser, Astonish, top up my salt etc thank you Flowers.

However, I'm happy to report that I still haven't had to tackle a tea stained mug (yes even those ones that seem more susceptible to staining) since switching to the Eco wash. Its blooming marvellous!

Sadly, I use Yorkshire tea bags and run my dishwasher on the Eco wash and the mugs come out tea stained.

AuntieMarys · 08/05/2023 12:37

I was just thinking this yesterday!!!!
