Garment steamer

Just looking at the ironing pile and wondering...do you use a steamer? is it interchangeable with an iron, so can be used for shirts and day-to-day stuff instead of an actual iron? Or is it more just to get a few wrinkles out?
Would you recommend yours?
I'm hoping it might be a magical solution, but thinking that if it is, why isn't everyone shouting from the rooftops about it?

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for clothes steamer recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best clothes steamers page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful.

I think they’re good for the odd thing rather than loads. Can you cut down on your ironing at all?

Oh yes, I'm ahead of you here, haven't done ironing for a very long time! But DH has shirts that do need ironing, if not by me, and DS occasionally needs to look presentable and I was just wondering ..
Anyway, have you got one? Is it any good?

I have a Philips one I use for a few quick bits rather than a whole load. It’s good but I still iron sadly!

I don’t have one, but I want one now. This video gives an idea I think

It's good but not for pure cotton shirts, if that's what you're planning to use it for. I predominately use it for tops and dresses, haven't had to bring out the iron in years!

Also good for freshening up fabric soft furnishings and those dry clean only items like coats!

Thanks to everyone who replied.
I followed up the Aldi link, but sadly it's no longer available online and although due to be in our local store today, wasn't when I popped in earlier.
It does seem like a good idea though, seems more back-friendly than ironing!

Not so good for shirts as pp said but I use it for a few tops, dresses and trousers. Shirts get done at dry cleaners in our house as none of us like ironing.

I bought one for shirts after loads of research and it does do the job but takes twice as long as ironing. Ironing is crisper too. I wouldn't recommend.
I think I should have invested in a better iron and ironing board!

I bought a very similar steamer to that Aldi one in lidl a couple of weeks ago, worth a look if you one nearby.
I've been using it for satiny/ daffy items to iron. To be honest it is easier but that little tank of water only does 2-3 items so I wouldn't tackle my whole pile with it.
