Carpet cleaning - house purchase

I'm about to buy a house which needs a fair bit of work doing to it. The carpets aren't great but I can't afford to replace them for a good while. I was thinking of hiring a rug dr/ carpet cleaner from the supermarket. Are they any good or would I be better getting a professional in? I have so many expenses coming up so I'm looking for any areas I can save money by doing bits myself.

Thanks

I would get a professional as they have those huge sucker uppers for all the water. Made my 15 year old carpets look like new. I had previously rented a Rug Doctor - no comparison.

Thanks. I wondered if it was a false economy trying to do it myself.

I've used rug doctor and wasn't impressed to be honest.

Agree with PP - rug doctor machines aren’t that great, and will take longer than you might think to use, especially if you have a whole house and stairs to do.

I’ve got a really good Bissell machine which IMO is much better than a rug doctor - if you think you’re going to need to clean your carpets again (which you might, if you’ve got any major stuff going on) or do occasional cleaning on high traffic areas due to pets/kids, that might be a more cost effective option overall … but still have to factor in actual time it will take to do it, and the extraction rate won’t be as good as a professional machine?

I've tried both. Rug doctor / bissel type is good but takes longer than you think and whilst it does do a good job it's nowhere near what the professional carpet cleaner chap did. He was super fast and carpets look brand new. It wasn't expensive either - lounge, stairs and bedroom for £60.
