Laundry pods? Powder? Liquid?

workbasedquestion · 27/01/2023 14:43

Very boring thread but it's a slow news day...

I usually use Tesco own cheap non bio in liquid form and fabric conditioner. Wondering if 3 in 1 pods are actually any good? I think they work out a little more expensive but would save a lot of space, just wondering if anyone has found them to be much better or worse than the liquids?

Also, is powder and better than liquid detergent?

I do at least 2 clothes loads a day (kids, dogs, animals, sporting uniforms etc).

Many thanks!

Only ever use pods when going to a laundrette eg when camping abroad for a week so easier to take a pod. So they do serve a purpose even if not everyday use

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 28/01/2023 16:20

I use powder because it's packaged in cardboard, not plastic. Clothes get perfectly clean.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 28/01/2023 16:21

Powder, used liquid and it made machine smell and was hard to get rid of. Washing machine repair chap says only use powder, have had no issues since!

Chewbecca · 28/01/2023 16:22

Powder because it is SO much cheaper and does the job.

Powder! Adjust the dose for size of laundry load and also level of soiling and water hardness. Stick it straight in the back of the drum rather than in the drawer - saves cleaning out a gummy drawer and stops any lumps.

You can just stick the powder into the drum?! This is a game changer! Every time I do a wash, there’s always a massive hard lump of powder in the drawer and it’s super annoying.

SwedishEdith · 28/01/2023 16:25

Powder. I don't bother with colour/non-colour but am annoyed you can get a big box of non-bio powder on Sainsbury's but not the same size box of bio. And yes, it does feel like it's being phased out😡

speakout · 28/01/2023 16:30

I use powder- Lidl Formil- £2.99 for 40 washes. Cleans well.
I prefer to buy in a cardboard box.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 28/01/2023 16:30

Yes, just sprinkle the powder in the drum.

Floralnomad · 28/01/2023 16:30

I use Ariel powder , I had read somewhere that powder is better for the machine and I like it because you can decide on the dose yourself and most of what I wash isn’t actually dirty ( all adult house ) . I use Fairy non bio for the dogs stuff .

Yep. 😁

You're welcome!

speakout · 28/01/2023 16:33

I thought everyone just dumped the powder in the drum.

No sticky drawer to clean out.

EdwinsActsOfKindness · 28/01/2023 16:38

No idea why I’ve never done this. I suppose I always assumed that the drawer is there for a reason so that’s what you’re supposed to do!

Glad I opened this thread!

After using Ecover for years, I’ve started using powder. Which magazine tests rated Aldi bio powder as the best overall, so that’s what I bought. I’m very pleasantly surprised at the results. I use slightly less than recommended, because I always think that what they recommend is a ploy to make you use it up quicker and therefore buy more 😂
As others have said, the fact that it’s all cardboard packaging is also a real incentive.

Result Grin got a box of Sainsbury Colour Powder ( without the Lavender fragrance )
They must;ve concentrated the powder , the box is tiny.
The new 80 wash is similar size to the old 44 . And the new 40 is mini
Less cardboard, less space taken up . Just need to use a smaller scoop .

Persil non bio powder - 2 kids with sensitive skin and anything else breaks them out in eczema. The Surf coconut powder is nice! One day I'll be able to use something other than person non bio I hope. Don't like liquids or tabs though. The Ariel gel is ok if memory serves - the smell lasts forever. Nice clean smell too not synthetic perfumey like fabric softener.

WithIcePlease · 29/01/2023 23:41

Powder straight in the drum
Less residue on clothes than liquid
Cheaper to buy
I only ever use about 1/2- 2/3 recommended amount but more if stuff is properly dirty

Anon778833 · 29/01/2023 23:43

I prefer powder, generally. My favourites are Daz and Lenor Camomile etc. they get everything super clean.

MotherofPearl · 30/01/2023 12:50

Powder (straight into drum) because:

  • Gets clothes cleaner ime
  • Keeps washing machine free of slime (which seems to build up with tabs & liquids)
  • Easy to adjust dosage
  • Packaging is cardboard which is much easier to recycle than plastic
fizzyfood · 30/01/2023 12:58

For those mentioning colour powder, I've been able to get Tesco's colour powder recently.

isthismylifenow · 30/01/2023 13:08

Mainly powder as its the cheapest.

I do have liquid which I like to use for dark colours, as we only get bio here and I think the powder fades darker clothes somewhat.

I hate those pods. I tried a box and I spend 30 washes trying to get it to go in the right place, as they kept getting stuck in the door. No matter where I put it to start off with.

And the ones we get are overpowering with the smell.

Has your washing powder/liquid prices shot up in the UK like they have here? The prices are really ridiculous now.....

Suzie0003 · 31/01/2023 19:41

I use Aldi bio powder £2.99 for 40 washes. Purple box for colours, green box for whites

CambsAlways · 31/01/2023 19:46

Powder all the way for me

IheardYouButDontWantToAnswer · 31/01/2023 19:47

I use powder. It's better, envionmentally, and cheaper. It washes well.
