Do you use placemats?

We need new ones but I was looking the other week and they all seem a bit old fashioned if you know what I mean?

We have an oak table though and a 2 year old so we need something.

Just wondered what others use?

We do. We gave in and got kid ones for our table. They're from little wigwam. We've got one on dinosaurs, the British isles, flags, periodic table etc.

We have some posher chargers for times like Xmas

Eastereggsboxedupready · 23/01/2023 13:17

Morrison's placemats! Woven oblong style. Lasted about 4 years so far and going strong! Similar ones in cheaper shops like B&M are shoddy in comparison!

BarrelOfOtters · 23/01/2023 13:18

They are…I thought about slate but too clinky. Fabric not protective enough. So I jus5 went for plain melanine ones…

Brontosaurus · 23/01/2023 13:24

I agree they seem a bit old fashioned, but I use them anyway to protect our table. I have these.

Chelsea26 · 23/01/2023 13:24

We’ve got grey boring but inoffensive ones from dunelm
www.dunelm.com/product/grey-weave-pack-of-4-placemats-1000084830?defaultSkuId=30246788

But we also bought a table top protector from there which is easier with the 4 kids to be honest. Roll it out, eat, wipe, roll back up

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 23/01/2023 13:31

Yes, all the time on the dining table. I have loads, although within the same colour scheme ( cream, black, grey, terracotta) fabric placemats which are quite large, faux leather and glass main mats. I like to layer them ( quite often we have a tablecloth, and / or a runner as well). It’s nice to make an occasion of dinner, for the weekends or for guests.

I bought the bluebell 33 alphabet placemats. Look like scrabble tiles

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 23/01/2023 13:37

We have the reclaimed beach cork/plastic mats and always get complimented on them

What's the point of them?

Why not just wipe the table afterward if you're going to be wiping something.

I can see how they'd help give the table a look so to speak but can't see that they have a genuine function.

redtulip12 · 23/01/2023 13:50

I have the same as @Girlintheframe We each have our initial and then I have a mr, mrs & and a couple of ❤️'s for guests. They have lasted years and thoroughly recommend.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 23/01/2023 13:54

We do. I like how they define the table as an eating spot so all clutter is cleared off. I think making an effort encourages people to actually sit down together,,eat mindfully and chat for a > albeit short > time after.

Also and I know many will consider this precious but our dining table is a beautiful Terence Conran one which I want to keep for many more years and keep it looking nice so placements are compulsory Grin

Lyricallie · 23/01/2023 13:55

We do because our table is untreated wood so don’t want it wrecked but they’re fairly boring plastic grey ones from ikea.

Sprig1 · 23/01/2023 13:58

We do, we have slate.

Girlintheframe · 23/01/2023 14:42

@redtulip12 I've added to mine over the years with additional letters for the kids partners. I've had mine about 7 years now and use them daily. We have '&' for guests and I've recently purchased the penguin one as was so cute.

We have a lovely wood table which I do not want to damage with hot plates. Hot plates on wood can leave awful white marks which I think would be really hard (expensive) to get out.

AdelaideRo · 24/01/2023 22:15

I use them. I have a glass table and it scratches so a placemat protects it from the bottom of my plates/ serving dishes.

I've got a set of Denby ones that match mine china but they are looking a bit tatty now.

Really liked the JL blue/ gold geo ones up the page even though they aren't really my colour scheme!

genericperson123 · 29/01/2023 17:09

Late to the party - we have bamboo ones from Sainsburys / Habitat - they are quite plain looks wise which I like but haven't lasted all that well unfortunately so if you're thinking of something plain like that I'd avoid!!!

Slimjimtobe · 29/01/2023 21:30

No only at Christmas
we use a wipeable oil cloth instead so don’t need mats

MaggieFS · 29/01/2023 22:30

I really need a new set. I had glass ones but they're very dated, heavy and entirely unsuitable now I have DC.

I really don't want old school melamine type ones, but they do need to be wipe clean... open to more suggestions please!

LadyDanburysHat · 30/01/2023 11:36

We have plain cork ones, but loving the beach clean and the scrabble ones, so may update.

purplepencilcase · 30/01/2023 11:39

No, oil cloth table cloth over oak kitchen table works best for us.

Custord · 30/01/2023 11:44

Yes, we have a beautiful wooden table which would mark if we didn't.. We have these www.nordicnest.com/brands/lind-dna/

mewkins · 30/01/2023 11:47

I have some round water hyacinth ones. Ikea do them. They stop the wooden table from getting marked.
