I've burnt the bloody porridge on a really good stainless steel saucepan - and I mean burnt.

I've soaked it and scrubbed it but it's completely black on the bottom. I got a knife to it to se what was underneath and I see a glimmer of steel there.

Anyone got any tips to try and salvage it or should I just cut my losses and bin it ?

strnage thread title.

erm, I'd soak it overnight, if I still couldn;t clean it I'd chuck it.

I wouldn't expect to hear a cheep out of dh

VictorianSqualor · 05/02/2008 18:12

Lemon juice, soak it in lemon juice and get some good wire wool to scrub it, it'll be fine, dont use a knife though you'll just score the bottom of the pan.

Scootergrrrl · 05/02/2008 18:13

Soak it with a dishwasher tablet in, or fill with water and bicarb and leave to soak. It'll come straight off. And tell your DH he's welcome to take over if he can do better

Mymeems · 05/02/2008 18:15

Apparently if you boil up some washing powder in a bit of water in the pan it gets it clean... but I haven't tried this so cannot verify it!

fairydust · 05/02/2008 18:15

brilo pad the soapy ones

flamingtoaster · 05/02/2008 18:16

Soaking with biological washing powder also works, then use one of the little metal scrubby things - it will be fine!

I shall look upon my cheap thin Argos stainless steel pans with new appreciation.

i really, really object to the thread title.

MaLopez · 05/02/2008 18:32

I am sure the title was meant tongue in check. Off to find a pan and burn it to ashes in the vague hope that I will get the sack

hedgehog1979 · 05/02/2008 18:42

I can attest to the boiling with detergent/bicarb etc as when we (read the girls) burn things on guide camp in stainless steel this is the only way to get them clean

hippipotami · 05/02/2008 18:42

Oh dear guys, calm down re the thread title, it was a tongue in cheek comment I'm sure.

My dh often jokes that he will have to sack me, just like I often joke I am going to find myself a husband who is tall, dark, handsome and has untold riches!

But it it said in jest. Honestly.

Oenophile · 05/02/2008 18:50

My dear old mama used to say 'ohhh, you'd better get the creases/lumps/stains out of that or you'll get the sack!' Just a saying, those who found it odd must be much younger than I am or from a diffferent neck o' t'woods.

I can't wait to hear if any/all those tips work on poor old Tillyboo's pan - I've done this more than once myself and have binned the dread item - eagerly awaiting an update, TB!

burstingbug · 05/02/2008 18:58

Coke works quite well, put some in the bottom of the pan and gently boil.

Kimi · 05/02/2008 19:12

Bio soap powder and hot water boil for 5 mins then wash well.

padboz · 05/02/2008 19:18

Oven cleaner deals with anything burnt on. I burn a lot of things.

Tillyboo · 05/02/2008 19:23

Oh my god I can't believe anyone thought I was being serious about the thread title.
It was meant in jest honest .... But he has just handed me my P45

My dh is fantastic and does ALL the cooking as that's his way of winding down & he is a kind of chef ...

Hi Hippipotami - I gave Paul McKenna to the charity shop. How about you ?

I'll slink off back to the Arts and Crafts forum now ..

Thanks very much for the tips everyone, we are currently trying the coke option and will let you know how many suggestions we get through

I have heard dishwasher tablet or washing powder. I also use Soda Crystals (I have a bag in the cupbard for stuff like this, and smelly washing machines and stinky drains)

hippipotami · 05/02/2008 20:09

Hi Tilly, have just started listening to him again, but I am listening to him in desperate hope of shedding some weight as i am doing the Playtex Moonwalk (the half marathon one) in May.

So he is not ready for the charity shop yet, I live in hope he can perform a miracle for me

Good luck with the pan!!

Tillyboo · 10/02/2008 09:25

UPDATE .... UPDATE ...

The pan is now as good as new ! For anyone who has done the same silly thing as me i.e. forgetting you have something on the hob

What worked best was ..

Boiling a dishwasher table slowly on the hob. We had to do this 4 times. Then we got a wire wool to scrub away the residue.

Brilliant Tilly, I will file that method away for future use...

iMum · 10/02/2008 09:30
