my first ever link, so happy i can do it now, only just seen instructions, after a year!

GrapefruitMoon · 05/02/2008 16:55

Plan it yourself. Order one from Ikea. Get a local carpenter/handyman to fit it.

nailpolish · 05/02/2008 16:58

id love an ikea one but it seems so daunting
i dont know any joiners/electricians/plumbers and wouldnt know where or who to start phoning first

nailpolish save where you can , splurge where u can afford

good drawer mechanisms, handles, closing mechanisms, worktop NB,

splashback do u need it right away, paint will suffice .

presses from mfi/ikea etc can all be made look so much more with a good worktop, good sink, and a well chosen floor - ie easy to clean if you are changing that.

skip fancy lighting /spots/ halogens etc waste of money imo.

and dont get sucked in by sales guys telling you as one did on grand designs "four ovens makes it symetrical" the woman bought 4 ovens !! what a waste ...

nailpolish · 05/02/2008 17:04

LOL i saw that woman with 4 ovens

i was speechless

interesting what you say about paint will suffice - we have a LOT of tiles that need replaced - would they just rip old tiles off and smooth over for me i wonder? so i can paint it

do you think she uses the same one again and again or she rotates her usage?

OP posts:
Stairdemon · 05/02/2008 17:12

It was those special chandelier-type cooker hobs that did it for me - she obviously hasn't done her own cleaning for a long time....

Also looking into getting an updated kitchen - so following threads with interest...

Stairdemon · 05/02/2008 17:14

OOps - meant hoods not hobs...

in my old house, i never got round to tiling the worktop area and for 5 years it was perfectly fine. i had some nice trays in one area and magnetic knife thingy on another, then my appliances so u never realy noticed.

yes remove tiles,smooth and paint.

hermykne · 05/02/2008 18:32

np i'd say they use 1 and are slagged regularly mind u they may have been too posh for slagging friends!

hifi · 05/02/2008 19:07

hermykne, the man from kbbc says tiling your splashbacks is now passe. what you have is now fashion with 10mil granite edging up.

Fizzylemonade · 06/02/2008 20:15

Just re-fubished my kitchen, cabinets were in good nick but v old fashioned doors. Replaced my doors with those cream shaker ones from B&Q ourselves, then got local joiner to fit ikea cheap as chips worktops, new sink, and tap from screwfix and hob from comet. We have just laid laminate tiled floor ourselves although it has taken 3 weeks because we have an almost 5 yr old and almost 2 yr old to contend with!

Ikea do their own fitting, my sister has an ikea kitchen, it is to die for, the have those huge 800mm drawers with all their crockery stacked in it, no reaching over stuff to the back of cupboards, big larder unit, solid wood worktops. Ikea does amazing internal storage and as ikea kitchen cabinets are deeper than most they won't fit in any other kitchen

Don't tile behind the hob!! The grout discolours, I am having glass in my next house, easy to scrub and buff with an e-cloth!

bodiddly · 06/02/2008 20:24

bit biased here as my shop sells crown kitchens. pretty good quality similar to moben in price I would say! Let me know if you need any help with planning anything .. crown or otherwise!

nailpolish · 07/02/2008 13:07

do ikea fit kitchens? or do you have to plan it all yourself, buy it, then arrange joiner/electricial/plumber

rosieyorkshirelass · 07/02/2008 19:58

Don't touch B&Q with a barge pole- we got them to design and fit our kitchen. It took nearly two years to sort out bodge/cover-up jobs on the kitchen. Go for ikea- and get your own joiners, etc who you know will do a decent job. Probably cheaper in the long run- and lovely storage space. I wish we had done it now, instead. You live and learn!

I havent used Crown myself but have worked with a property developer and he uses them and recommend them. GOod prices and decent quality, IMO they look quite swish but are not over priced.
IKEA also goo dbut you do need to be organised re fitting/ordering etc.
