Ceiling airer/pulley recommendations

Hi all,

Does anyone have an old school style clothes airier/pulley that's suspended from the ceiling? And would you recommend? Considering one for my utility room to clear up some floor space of standing clothes airers.
We're a family of 2 adults and 2 kids under 3, so I have a ton of washing!

Thanks x

Oh, excellent question. We’ve just moved and I’m after one now we have a utility room.

I had this in my last house. Very sturdy once put up nicely. Just make sure you have enough standing room in front of it to put the clothes on it while it's pulled down.

Mine has five slats and is 1.5 metres long. It dries stuff really quickly, but to be honest I can't get that much on it - only say two adult t shirts on each slat. I think if I'd got one say 2.5 metres then I'd have been able to fit most of a wash on, but I didn't have the room for that.

perenniallymessy · 14/01/2023 10:05

An alternative/additional airer to consider is a laundry ladder like this www.juluhome.co.uk

We have it in our utility room over the radiator so clothes dry nice a quickly. It's easy to load, easy to fold away and you can get extra hooks and move it outside on sunny days if you want.

We got one as I didn't have space for a ceiling airer. We also have a coat rack on one wall that I can hung shirts/tshirts on hangers.

And if you are drying clothes in a room make sure you have an extractor fan in there or a dehumidifier. We have a constant trickle extractor with humidistat so we don't get damp issues.

Thanks everyone - all very helpful!
I hadn't considered the room around it when lowered for loading, so I shall need to measure again to make sure!!

Ahh the 1.5 would be useless for me then - I have mountains of washing!

I'll defo look into the ladder too as I've got a big radiator in the room and an extractor, so could be a good option!

Thanks all 🙂

I have the same laundry ladder as @perenniallymessy and love it. I use it every day!

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 15/01/2023 09:40

Ours is hung near the tumble drier which helps drying time (I tumble things that can be tumble dried and hang those that can’t/I don’t trust to go in the drier)

BMrs · 27/01/2023 07:11

Doesn't look as pretty but I have a couple of these. I use them to fry ours and kids trousers and you can get stacks on there. I also dry clothes hung on hangers on there but mine are in the cupboard out of the way on a ceiling hook

SpaceCandyCoconut · 27/01/2023 07:16

I have one, it's in the kitchen due to no space anywhere else so I have to be careful of cooking smells - but it holds a full load of washing (minus shirts which I tend to hang in the airing cupboard on a hanger). Mine's a SheilaMaid. It's great.

CatChant · 27/01/2023 07:46

I have a Sheila Maid and it takes loads. I put shirts on hangers to hang from it so I can get lots of them on at a time, and I put socks on a peg carousel which I hang from it.

It is very, very useful but I do also use free-standing folding airers because we have tons of sports kit to wash, as well as normal everyday washing.

I have a high ceiling so the Sheila Maid and the clothes hanging from it don’t get in the way. It might be more awkward with a lower modern ceiling.

fairysimples · 27/01/2023 07:54

Get as long a one as you can and as many slats as you can. I have 6 slats and I wish I'd got 9.

bluesky45 · 27/01/2023 08:03

We have one, it's got 6 slats and I think it's 1.8m long, as big as will fit in the space. It fits a full load plus a bit more usually (depends how many kids vests there are coz if there's a lot of them in a wash, it takes up a lot of room on the airer). We love it. Dries clothes quicker than a floor standing airer. Just got to make sure it goes into the joists because it is heavy when full.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 27/01/2023 08:06

I’ve just put a pulley in my new utility-it’s 1.8m long and it’s a totally game changer. We’re a 3 adult household and I’d say I’ve managed to decrease my tumble dryer usage to a third of what it was

Fashiontatts · 28/01/2023 20:22

Amazing thanks everyone! Plans to get measuring up tomorrow to see how big I could accommodate

I'd like to get one too. Has anyone found a company that installs them for you? Mine will be on a sloped ceiling so I'm slightly worried about it.

SuperSange · 28/01/2023 20:37

I love ours; it's on the landing over the stairwell.

cariadlet · 28/01/2023 20:40

I've got one in the kitchen. We inherited it when we bought the house and I absolutely love it.

It's got 4 slats. Not sure how long they are but they take one load of washing.

I can get bedding on there when I change a double bed. I don't have a tumble dryer so that makes a huge difference in the winter.

If I'm doing a couple of loads then big and heavy stuff like bath towels or dh's sweatshirts go on there while smaller or lighter bits go on the clothes horse and radiators.

This is my goal - we need to do a little house remodelling but once that's complete, I plan to have a ceiling airer above our stairs. It's wasted space in a well ventilated area, it totally makes sense so long as you can reach it to load without falling down the stairs!

mumtt · 14/11/2024 09:36

I have one and I LOVE it. I wouldn't be without it. I had one previously in a rented house and I got a guy to put it up for me here. It's over the stairs/landing. I saw it put there in a magazine and thought perfect - my house is very tiny. My daughter always had tons of laundry up constantly and modern airers take up room and had to constantly be taking up room (and occasionally put away) I did get a whole house ventilation system because of condensation and that has helped tremendously. But anyway, I love it. I think it's 2 metres or so. it's so out of the way and you don't have to brush past it or trip over it or put it away. I do need to varnish it at some point because there's a wee bit of mould starting on one of the slats. I live in Belfast so quite damp.
