How stop fleece clothes stinking after being washed?

Hello,

For some reason, my fleece items stink after being washed at 40. I use washing liquid and softener. No other clothes smell. How can I stop this?

What do they smell of? How are you drying them?

If things are being dried too slowly they can smell fusty, is it that?

Thank you for your reply. I leave them out to dry on the drying rack. They smell like clothes that have been left out to dry but haven’t dried properly - musty.

You shouldn't use fabric softener on fleece, that won't be helping. Same reason you should never use it on sportswear- coats the fibres.

I would ditch the softener and maybe try a liquid for sports clothes? A one off hotter wash might be worth a go in case of any ingrained smell that isn't getting washed out.

Ditch the liquid soap and softener. Use washing powder. Bung in some Napisan to make sure the mould (that's the smell) is killed.

Brilliant advice. Thank you all.

Also hang them to dry on coat hangers (I use the patio door curtain rail when the curtains are open or I also have over the door coat hanger which you can suspend the clothes hanger on, no overlapping) Rather than folding/draping over an airer.

Try washing at 30°, if you wash man made fibres too warm it actually seals in odours. I only found this out when I was washing DH's gym kit, 30° is a game changer.

@Lavendersquare wish if read this earlier. Chucked them back in at 40 with 2 extra rinses. Used powder instead of liquid and no softener. May contemplate using the tumble dryer.
