Mould and dehumidifiers

Hi my daughters room gets quite bad mould. She’s in the box room. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good humidifier and how long we should keep it on each day. So far just rubbing down with mould spray.

Also any ideas how to stop under the stairs smelling musty?

We bought a Meaco 8L dehumidifier. You get machines with different capacities. You do need to run it for a long period. If you use a steam iron or if you're drying wet clothes indoors, then you should keep a window open a bit in that room and when you have a shower keep a window open whilst the shower is going, not just after you finish. Keep windows open a tiny bit whenever you can. Also keep the heating on. Basically it takes a lot of electricity to deal with it but keep the humidifier going and gradually the moisture levels will come down.

You need to sort out the source of the dampness first. What's your ventilation regime?

We just bought a cheap one from Amazon for our dds room. Think it was around £40/£50. We run it all day and it’s made a massive difference to how the room feels. Her room is part of an extension (not done by us) and has a flat roof. We can have a problem with back mould on the ceiling, but we haven’t had any since we started using the dehumidifier everyday.

I'd highly recommend Kilnrock to clean the mould away and once's it's gone a Meaco Dehumidifier- I've attached pictures. We've found the best thing is to turn the dehumidifier on at night and set it to a humidity of 45/50. Usually we have no condensation then in the mornings, if you do have some wipe it down straight away and leave the dehumidifier on until it turns itself off at 45/50. Then open the windows in the room for as long as you can. Repeat the process. I also find having the dehumidifier on the low fan setting works out best on energy use.
