Hi, I've been recovering from a mental health crisis where I was really depressed and totally neglected my house. My kitchen is the only room able to be used properly. I mean stuff everywhere and needs deep cleaned. Please can I have some tips for cleaning? I've not let anyone visit me and my relative is coming on Friday to stay for a few days as they live far away. What do I do first. Literally stuff everywhere on every surface, floor and tables and cabinets etc. Help!!

Just a one off cleaner. I have a daughter who is here 50% of the time.

Well then you really should have planned to stick around to tell her what you wanted doing the first time

meowzeer · 24/11/2022 19:39

She knew what I needed done, sent pics etc. I went out so she could get on with the clean. That wasn't the reason she couldn't manage to come!

Feef. It wouldn't have mattered if she had stayed around because she didn't come as she overran.

Super well done meowzeer. You did it! Enjoy your time with your visitor, the Body shop advent and the books. 🙌🏻

@meowzeer

It's really not easy and when you can't see the woods for the trees it's often easier said than done to just do it!

Well done though! Honestly, I bet it's made a massive difference and it must feel so nice to sit at the end of the day with a lovely space!

Enjoy the few days with your relative!

PS - I hate cleaning skirting boards - it's my most hated task!

Well done op!!

im so happy for you

i think it is great that you managed to just get up and do it. The trick is not to think about it too much and just go and do it

Quitelikeit · 24/11/2022 20:42

Also if you can afford it going forward why not hire a cleaner regularly

homehearts · 24/11/2022 21:23

Well done OP! I have bouts of bad mental health and find the cleaning overwhelming.

I try to do bits of cleaning throughout the week
and get cleaners to come in once a month. It really helps.

meowzeer · 24/11/2022 22:35

Thanks. It feels so nice to sit in my living room and cook in my kitchen. I feel I've accomplished a lot this week. Thanks for all your kind words.

Tescoheslth · 24/11/2022 22:47

Crikey well done that's amazing!

Canttouchthis88 · 24/11/2022 22:56

Well done OP! You must feel great, what an accomplishment! Do you have before and after pics you could share? Would love to see how lovely you've made it!

keffie12 · 24/11/2022 23:06

Clean one room at a time is the best way forward. I've recently helped my friend out with a similar story to yours. She couldn't get on top of it. She broke down and finally told me. That's how we did it. One room at a time

notapizzaeater · 24/11/2022 23:19

You've done great, I've found the quickest way of doing skirting boards is pop a damp sock on your foot or hand and quickly wipe over them

Ratherdampbelowstairs · 25/11/2022 00:33

Well done. That is amazing.

caringcarer · 25/11/2022 00:51

Pick up dirty washing pop into wash machine. Then start with bathroom. Toilet, basin, floor. Vac first then mop. Rest. Then dry clean washing. Then start putting dirty washing in machine again. Change duvets, pillow cases and sheets. Rest. Then load dishwasher. Bleach surfaces. Rest. Clean cooker top. Vacuum, mop floors. Rest.

Ok so stop beating yourself up, you have been unwell and when we are unwell houses get out of control, you have not hurt anyone, no one dies,
it is just stuff out of place.
Just start with one room making piles and working through each pile.Do not shame yourself for the mess, this is key, it is just mess.

This might help you if you need a mental pick you up at some point but attack and keep going and know that this is something that happens when people get unwell and it is ok, nothing to be ashamed of at all, normal and you are going to do what you can in the time you have.

@meowzeer hope the weekend went well and how’s the house going?

i am strangely invested and in your story!

meowzeer · 03/12/2022 22:18

@Bien22 the weekend was lovely thanks! So nice seeing my relative. Keeping up with housework too. Which is hard when I've been working a 50 hour week this week. Glad to be back to normal. Thanks!
