Please can you recommend me your steam iron?

Our steam iron has died and need to replace :-(

Every one I've looked at online has very mixed reviews and lots of complaints of poor longevity.

We don't do a lot of ironing so don't need a steam generator iron, but would ideally like something self-cleaning or with a cleaning reminder function that is fine with tap water.

MNHQ Update
If you’re short on time and have landed here looking for steam iron recommendations, check out our guide to the best steam irons and best steam generator irons - all of which have been tried and tested by real parents.

Here's a quick look at top irons recommended on this thread and elsewhere on Mumsnet:

Tefal SV8154G0 Express Vision Steam Generator Iron
Russell Hobbs Power Steam Ultra Iron
... or if you want to avoid ironing altogether, Mumsnetters swear by Lenor Crease Releaser Spray

We hope this is helpful! Flowers

I know you’ve said you don’t need a steam
generator iron but honestly they make life so so much easier even if you are doing just a small amount. Mine absolutely flies through. I wasn’t convinced I needed one but I’d never go back now

i have this one and it’s been great, super easy to clean

Thanks for coming back to me @Shylo!

I have been looking at that one and was umming and aahing but then ruled it out as we didn't need one! Maybe I need to rethink that!!

How long have you had it? Has it lasted? It's a big expense even with the BF deal.

Can I use it on a normal ironing board? I've not long replaced ours and it was quite expensive so not keen on getting another quite yet. It's just a normal ironing board not a steam generator board.

Ive had the same steam generator for many years and wouldn’t have been without it with 3 kids and constant ironing.

However its now only me and I have very little ironing. (Summer will be different with linens and more cotton though)

The steam generator is heavy and a faff to get out. I bought a regular steam iron for around £30 in Argos around a month ago and it was easy to iron a few items

Steam generators are amazing for large amounts (you’ll do it in a quarter of the time) steaming curtains, coats, dresses etc. No need to iron just hold the iron a few inches away and blast the steam

Generator’s tend to be heavier so I would keep mine on a cupboard whilst ironing.

Both totally different items really. Love my generator one but its just the faff of getting it out for 1 or 2 items

I haven't ironed since 2013, I just put everything on coathangers when it comes out of the tumble dryer or off the line. That crease release spray is a revelation as well.

I hate ironing with a passion its the devils work!

Someone I worked with suggested a steam generator and said it was one of the best things they had ever bought. I hummed and hared but did buy a Tefal one.

Why oh why did I not buy one earlier, they are fantastic, yes the base is big but the iron is light and I use a extra large ironing board. Had mine now over 6 years.
When I moved (from the UK) I did buy a normal steam iron, waste of money, went out and bought another generator, cost an arm and a leg but worth it.

Have a look at this from Good Housekeeping gives you some good advice.

Sorry to hijack but does anyone have a steam iron where you can 'lock' the steam on instead of continually pressing the button on for steam? My ancient iron broke and I can't find a new one that doesn't hurt my fingers with the constant pressing or holding the button down to get steam. Thanks!

Yes we don’t iron much at all. But my DH has to iron his work shirts and trousers. I also find Oxford pillowcases need an iron and the ends of duvet covers (where they do up) periodically. I have a (very) few items of clothing that I iron as needed because the hanger method isn’t quite enough. Don’t worry I iron as little as possible!!

Same here re not much ironing. Ive also got to the stage where I wear clothes that dont ironing.
Love a crisp white cotton shirt but the thought of ironing them kills me. I have several in my wardrobe all ironed and they will bloody stay that way

TooHotToRamble · 07/12/2022 16:56

We bit the bullet and went for the Phillips steam generator in the end!

DH has used it and is really rating it. As PP said so much faster...and it irons better than our previous reasonable quality steam irons.

So far all good, if a bit pricey!

We got ours in BF sale for £119....

Well that didn't last long. We've only used it twice and it's aIready spitting calcium deposits everywhere. Not sure if it's faulty or poorly designed. It's supposed to cope with tap water.
