Help I've been really stupid and used steel wool on my sink

I don't know what I was thinking It was by the sink, the sink was dirty, i just picked it up and cleaned the sink using it. I can see I have scratched it. Is there anything I can do to remedy this? I feel very stupid.

It won’t rust, don’t worry, it just looks bad and will continue to do so. That can’t be repaired, I’m sorry,

RichardsGear · 17/11/2022 23:26

Just bung a washing up bowl in it.

carefulcalculator · 17/11/2022 23:26

You'll be able to buy a nice bowl and cover the worst of it up. We all makes mistakes <glares at DH who once broke a lovely bedframe by being very careless when dismantling it>

BlueRaincoat1 · 17/11/2022 23:28

I hate washing up bowls! I may have a radical change of heart now... 😂

Mine looks the same as that photo OP. I've been here 10 years and no rust. I'd stop worrying about it and choose a new washing up bowl to help you forget about it.

MossGrowsFat · 17/11/2022 23:31

Like really mine looks like that and I doubt I've used a brillo pad on it as I'm slovenly. So just by normal wear and tear. Definitely not gone rusty

Aquamarine1029 · 17/11/2022 23:32

At least your sink is clean! 🤣

I really do know exactly how you feel. Many moons ago I did something of a similar vein and couldn't believe I had been so daft. I beat myself up for several days then got a hold of myself. 20+ years later and my husband and I laugh about it.

Lentil63 · 17/11/2022 23:32

Oh dear! I think I’d find a Facebook cleaning group and ask them. Failing that I’d probably try a magic eraser.

BlueRaincoat1 · 17/11/2022 23:32

Thanks @Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight I think I'll get that. And a washing up bowl.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to chill out about it a bit. It's a sink.

Every house I've ever lived in had a sink which looked like that. Really, it's just a sink.

If it makes you feel better we had a beautiful oxidised copper backsplash installed in our new kitchen and one day I went mad and polished a very prominent part with copper polish. Of course I removed all the beautiful oxidisation and left a massive shiny circle which was so visible. My husband was very nice about it and over time as the copper has changed we don't notice it anymore, but I remember the awful sick feeling when I first did it!!!

It would have been really easy to oxidase it again yourself. The solution costs about £8.

Is it quite new? Or just very well cared for? - I got a new sink a few years ago, and it got scratched like yours - I remember googling like mad and I found something that said stainless steel sinks look better after a year - I can't remember why though... But it really did look better after time!

IfOnlyOCould · 18/11/2022 00:10

Have a look on YouTube. I bet you can polish out the scratches to some degree.

I'd use some superfine wet or dry sandpaper maybe 1000 or 2000 grit and sand away. Or look on Amazon for some stainless steel polishing cream or car paint scratch remover.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/11/2022 10:49

I think it'll smooth over a bit with use and it definitely won't rust.

I once painted a wardrobe using a towel as a dust sheet, with oil based paint, on top of a brand new carpet. I felt very stupid indeed when I lifted the towel to find paint all over the brand new day old carpet. DH was very nice about it. And with some white spirit I did manage to get most of it out but I felt so sick looking at it. I am a clumsy idiot at the best of times 😂

BlueRaincoat1 · 18/11/2022 14:11

@As476 this is very much the kind of thing I would do

My cleaner used steel wool to clean the brand new stainless steel kitchen sink..(no idea why) it looks awful now.. we just have to leave it now, as we won't be able to replace it with out lifting the heavy counter top off... I hope to find a solution to fix it, then again I am probably the only, person in my house who notices it..
