We have an untreated pine dining table. What products do I need to put on it so that it is protected against food/liquid spills??

I've just bought a new (old) table. I sanded it, few coats of wood stain then two coats of polyurethane to waterproof it. I did it over three days and I'm really pleased with it.

Clean it down, sand it and paint it? or just pose the question to youtube?

Danish oil, easy to apply after correct prep, long lasting, not too artificial a finish, hard wearing, easy to re do if needed

When I used to have more time I would varnish but it stinks to high heaven (dissipates after a few days, gives good level of protection, brand was 151). I also used an oak stain (Ronseal interior) on some untreated pine (from eBay) which was water based and easy to deal with, low odour. Came up nice with a light sand between coats and to finish.

Waxes are ok too, much easier to deal with.

If you want to get creative and paint (or have time) some chalk paint with a clear wax finish (brand rustoleum, buffed in) is durable.
