Is there anyone here that works for a housing association or a council? That could advise me? Can i declare myself as homeless to the council due to living In a mouldy council house? And yea I know I’m not technically homeless but my house is full of mould and it’s been this way for 10 years. I complain EVERY winter. This winter they’ve just completely ignored my complaint!! I don’t want to live here anymore. And before anyone says it’s condensation I have tried EVERYTHING! I open windows, have the heating on, I spent £180 on a dehumidifier but it still has mould in every room upstairs, all my front door is black with mould ( it’s a wooden brown door but is black with mould) it’s something to do with the ceilings but it will cost them thousands to regenerate it so they won’t! I am at my wits end, my kids have to sleep next to these walls that are either mouldy or been sprayed with mould sprays so that’s all they breathe in!!
I’ve been on the council housing list for 6 years due to overcrowding anyway but o already live in a council house and I hate it!! I can’t decorate or have carpets because they will just get mouldy. It’s affecting my mental health

Hi op

Sorry you and dc are going through that, it sounds awful.

The things I'd try to do to resolve it would be

  1. make a written formal complaint to the council and ask for a copy of their complaints process
  2. contact your local mp and send them a copy of the written complaint you've made
  3. contact the environmental health department at the council and ask them to come and check your property to check it is fit for habitation
  4. contact shelter and have a look at their website https://england.shelter.org.uk/housingadvice/repairs/issyourhomeefitforr_habitation
  5. if nothing resolved through complaints process you can contact the housing ombudsman
  6. make sure you have a paper trail of everything / anyone you contact. Email where you can, if phone calls take names and job title and keep a note of dates and times of calls and what was discussed, so you can refer back to this if needed

Really hope you get it sorted soon

Environmental health is the way to go.

You can also arrange to do a mutual exchange if you just want out. A lot of people aren't going to want your mouldy property, but you might get lucky if someone from another area needs to move to your area, someone desperate to move due to a neighbour dispute, or someone needing a larger home than they've got, for example.

Hi - did you get this sorted?? I know a company who can help - they do housing disrepair clams and can basically force your landlord to carry out repairs. You can also claim compensation and it's been going on so long! If you go to www .tenant-safe.com (retype into your browser!) Good luck
