Glasses (drinking)

This may sound a bit frivolous, I'm in the process of a major declutter before my house goes on the market, I don't have tonnes of clutter but I just don't want to take anything with me I don't love/need and I want to make packing as easy as possible.

I'm stuck on few things that I got as wedding presents that I really don't want to take to my new home with DP, one example is glasses, in addition to having been wedding presents they're also very dated.

I'm going to donate/sell my crystal wine and champagne glasses but I'll need to replace them.

What's stylish in glasses?

I don't mean every day tumblers, more glasses for entertaining. I'm thinking I'll keep the Crystal whiskey tumblers because they're less fussy, so I need wine glasses and glasses for tall drinks/mixers, but I don't want lots of specific glasses, I don't need separate glasses for gin etc.

Links would be appreciated.

I'd be no help as I still drink out of the crystal we got years ago.

Hopefully somebody will be along soon with some lovely suggestions.

I don’t see the point in expensive glasses as they inevitably get broken, and if they don’t get broken they go out of fashion and you wish they would get broken!

I find Ikea glasses are perfectly decent unless you’re a massive wine buff and it doesn’t sound like you are.

Violettaa · 30/10/2022 17:21

Zara Home always has gorgeous glasses. But I agree that Ikea wins for day to day usefulness.

MrsMontyD · 30/10/2022 18:18

I'm definitely not a wine buff

TK Maxx is good for glasses. I’m lazy about washing up so all my lovely stemmed glasses have been replaced by Duralex tumblers-cheap and never go out of fashion and John Lewis short stem wine glasses-the pressed glass ones so quite chunky. They look very good if you have a modern/industrial style. I like the idea of stemless wine glasses but found them too big-found some lovely rum glasses in TK Maxx and everyone comments how nice they are.

Ohhhhh! You should get in touch with the poster whose husband recently managed to accidentally pull down the cupboard containing all their glassware, including the wedding present stuff.

You’d have lots to talk about!

I use duralex for everyday drinking, including red wine. White wine I like a stemmed thin glass. Champagne I like a thin tulip glass. I also have specific martini glasses. I have a lot of glasses, it’s a crux!!

I think I’m in the minority but I don’t think the real, traditional crystal ever goes out of fashion. I love them. However the plain and more modern glasses I have are all from LSA. Really sleek and hand blown. They’re very fine and delicate but I think they’re elegant.

JiggingJigsaws · 03/11/2022 20:20

Good quality crystal never goes out imo

Isseywith3witchycats · 04/11/2022 21:42

Dartington crystal glasses are stylish but simple and sturdy so will never look dated i have some georgous wine glasses that were a wedding present but they are so fancy and the stems are so thin i dare not use them in case i break one

catfunk · 04/11/2022 21:53

I use Duralex small tumblers for red wine and juice and ikea ribbed tall glasses for water and mixers. Both bulletproof and stackable, dishwasher safe.

MrsMontyD · 05/11/2022 08:39

I'll have a look at the Duralex.

The main issue with the Crystal wine glasses is that they're very small, wine glasses are much bigger now. The champagne flutes are ok size wise.
