Getting rid of rust on a kitchen sink

KookyNotOoky · 23/10/2022 19:52

Didn't realise that the metal drying rack was causing rust on the kitchen sink. Hard scrubbing is doing nothing. Is there a way to get rid of the rust, or will I need to replace the sink?

Have you tried jif (cif)? Failing that, and this is a bit weird, try rubbing it with half a cut potato. I may work!

doodlyfiddly · 23/10/2022 19:56

IT may work! 🙄

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/10/2022 19:57

Is it a stainless steel sink? Pink stuff paste gets rid of it on mine.

gordonpym · 23/10/2022 19:58

Cif . I don't know what that stuff is made of, but it is magic. Otherwise, try pure bleach.

ZaZathecat · 23/10/2022 20:01

The Pink Stuff gets rid of almost anything

KookyNotOoky · 23/10/2022 20:09

Ah that's great thanks. Never heard of Pink Stuff - will give Cif and then that a try :)

(it's a rental so needs to look as new or LL will charge for a new sink out of my deposit no doubt).

Cleaner here.. Mould and mildew spray. Green scourer..
Did up a manky sink just yesterday..

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/10/2022 20:23

The pink stuff paste (the one in the tub) would be perfect for that - it leaves a sort of water repellent film on my sink which makes it look really good.

Barkeepers Friend. Brilliant for getting rid of rust spots on stainless steel.

wonkylegs · 23/10/2022 21:14

Another suggestion for barkeepers friend works really well for this kind of thing.

vipersnest1 · 23/10/2022 21:19

Another one for barkeepers friend. It's really good for rust (I have ancient Le Crueset pans and other things that tend to rust if left on stainless steel to drain).
It also tackles limescale and other stains.
Can you tell I'm a fan? Grin

Pink Stuff - the one that comes in a tub. The stuff of miracles.

Poppins2016 · 24/10/2022 01:07

Bicarbonate of soda is great for removing rust. I've used it on bicycle spokes, sinks and cutlery and it's worked every time without fail.

Poppins2016 · 24/10/2022 01:12

(You make a paste with water, polish it into the rust, keep polishing until rust is removed - results are fast so you won't be at it for ki77).

Poppins2016 · 24/10/2022 01:13

*won't be at it for long!

Nordicmom · 24/10/2022 02:57

Bar keepers friend worked for me !

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 24/10/2022 03:14

Cif cream always. NOT Cif spray.

nottodaytomorrow · 24/10/2022 07:54

Brillo pad .. i have just had to sort similar 🙈

KookyNotOoky · 24/10/2022 23:12

tried that Pink Stuff and it's working really well - 80% of the sink looks almost new. Some of the tougher patches are requiring multiple coats though and a good dose of elbow grease.

Scrunch up a bit of tin foil, wet it and scrub the rust with it.
