How can I keep next door's cat away?!?

Next door's cat seems to use our front door step as a toilet, and an area to "mark its scent". The smell seeps through the bottom door frame and makes our hallway smell disgusting! Also, I am always rolling my pushchair in and out picking up various unpleasantaries on the wheels!!! How can I keep it off our door step? So far we have tried: Catapult, pepper, Dettol, orange peel... Help!!

nice . Whatever you try will only work if you give the whole area a really good clean before you dose it with the deterrent -if they can pick up even the slightest scent of their 'marking' then they will carry on using your step. Vinegar is another one to try but if dettol didn't work....

Other than that borrow a cat-hating dog and tie it to front door all day...

a good spraying of pusscat (while it is on your step) with a hose will also do the trick but not the easiest thing to achieve either

Our neighbours cats poop in our garden too. I sprinkle Get off my Garden crystals or Scent off gel and it seems to do the trick. I do find that I have to sprinkle it more often than it says on the bottle, but it really does make them bugger off and shit somewhere else

we,ve got a cat water gun, which is triggered to squirt water by a motion sensor. \very effective, but you may have a shower every time you leave the house!

oooh - thanks for the suggestions! DH particularly likes the cat water gun approach. Much more humane than some of his suggestions . We scrub our step every couple of days with Dettol, but I think some "scent" must still remain because back comes the cat!!! Will get online to see what we can get! Thanks again.

God catstar let me know how you get on! We have the same problem with our neighbours cat BUT we have 2 cats ourselves (both females who are a bit pansy-ish about defending their territory). Problem is our neighbours' cat is not allowed in the house or back garden due to the presence of (new) rotweiller, parrot plus assorted other birds. So he lives in the road or our back garden and sprays on: front door mat, garden furniture, wellies left outside, cars, bins - basically our entire garden.
We've asked her to get him neutered which she always claims she is going to do but frankly seems more interested in acquiring more and more bizarre pets than looking after the ones she has.

a gardener friend once told me ginger keeps them away - all I can say is that yes, it keeps them away but only after they've been sick on your back doorstep from inhaling the stuff! Use with caution!!

Air rifle

Guaranteed to work

my cat is already bulemic (gulps her food and then vomits daily) so I don't want to give her any more vomiting!

Do you think this could be grounds for neglect?
