Where do you hang your washing indoors?

As the title says really. I've got three "clothes horses" and can't find the best place to put them during the colder months as 1) they don't dry fast enough and 2) I hate them being in the way!

We use the spare room to dry washing in, but we have a dehumidifier which is the absolute nuts for drying washing. It stops the house getting damp and mouldy and dries clothes on an airer really quickly.

AlwaysLatte · 20/10/2022 22:06

We built a laundry room as part of a recent extension. Very well insulated and with a cheap air blower on the wall plus Sheila Maid and stand alone airer so all the washing is out of sight. One of the best renovations we've made!

WhatHappenedToYoyos · 20/10/2022 22:06

Airport cupboard door open with airer in front of it so it gets the warmth of the cupboard and dries quickly. I hang washing out all year round but if it's like today (torrential rain all day) then I'll do the wash in the evening and hang it up before bed so it's not getting in the way all day. Usually it's dry by the next day and no damp smell.

Before DCs I used the spare bedrooms but now I have none spare 🤣 in front of a sunny window or French doors perhaps if you don't have an airing cupboard?

WhatHappenedToYoyos · 20/10/2022 22:07

*airing not airport. I'd be interested to see an airport fit in my house 🤣

YourWinter · 20/10/2022 22:07

My kitchen has beams and I have two pulley airers screwed into them. Clothes go on hangers, undies on a couple of multi-peg hangers. Also have radiator and over-door airers, a concertina airer and a three-fold gate airer. Just about everything goes out on the line though.

Lcb123 · 20/10/2022 22:08

Spare bedroom - out the way, and the room gets sun from late morning until evening (2nd floor flat so lots of sun!)

CaronPoivre · 20/10/2022 22:08

Sheila Maid in the boot room and an Aga airer.

Autumnsunshines · 20/10/2022 22:09

I start off at the front of the house (lounge) where sun is in the morning. If I’m still home later afternoon I move clothes horse to the back of the house (dining/living room) where it’s sunny in afternoon.

usually I trap my fingers and/or have to re hang everything as it falls off while I’m dragging the clothes horse.

Just to update we got a dehumidifier this week and what a difference it has made to how quickly it dries!

We have a laundry room which is bath length (so we have a bath in it too) and a strong pole across the top of the bath (sort of like a shower curtain pole but nicer). It's really handy for hanging stuff to dry when needed.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 20/11/2022 22:19

Which dehumidifier did you get and where was it from OP?

Rainallnight · 20/11/2022 22:21

I’d be interested to know that too!

Tyrozet · 20/11/2022 22:41

At the back of the kitchen - bit of a redundant space which isn't used for anything else but does have a radiator and a window. Everything goes on the clothes horse and the window is open to avoid damp.

I do need to remember to move things if I'm cooking anything with alot of garlic, otherwise we can ward off the vampires inadvertently!

SoupKit · 20/11/2022 22:45

Airing cupboard on coat hangers and a peg thing for smalls. Sheets over the bannisters. Everything dries overnight.

Trying to talk son and girls into a small dehumidifier for their flat spare room they've mould forming on the window in their bedroom. I lost a pile of clothes and leather boots in a damp bedroom once

KnickerlessParsons · 20/11/2022 22:55

Clothes horses on the landing.

sorcerersapprentice · 20/11/2022 23:00

Still dry it outside, which is fine if it's windy. Then finish off on radiator or airing cupboard for an hour

notdaddycool · 20/11/2022 23:04

Bathroom, half a load goes on the towel rail the rest on clothes horse, extractor keeps damp air changing.

validnumber · 20/11/2022 23:08

Spare room on clothes horses. We can't hang it outside even in summer as the birds pop on it and I can't be doing with all the hanging and bringing back in at exact times.
We have a Meaco dehumidifier which wasn't cheap. I researched it a lot before purchasing.

silverpinecones · 20/11/2022 23:15

There isn't really anywhere in our house to put them when they aren't at least a bit in the way. If it's earlier in the day I put them in the dining room by the door as the light shines through and helps, and if it's not too cold or rainy I can easily open the door and pop it outside. However we have recently been using the log burner a lot more in the evening (but not the heating) so have been putting 2 airers in the living room as the heat really works. When we go to bed and the fire is still dying down we try to remember to put them in front of the fire!

AlloftheTime · 22/11/2022 06:30

@PumpkinSpicedTea
which dehumidifier did you get ?
keen to get one this week but there is so much choice!
would prefer a model that is not too big or heavy to manoeuvre….

greenacrylicpaint · 22/11/2022 06:35

up in the attic.

we have put a line up there. plus a couple of airers.

there is heatin up there, but we only put it on very low if it's literally freezing outside.
things dry less quick in the cold but most things will be dry within 24 hours.
might swtch on the heated airer for jeans or other heavy items.

Caspianberg · 22/11/2022 06:47

We have a tower drying rack which seems to be the most compact type. Use indoors and outdoors. Indoors in the office or corner of our bedroom

user374698 · 22/11/2022 06:55

I partly dry it outside if it's windy or in the tumble dryer and then I put it over a radiator airer in the living room and a wooden airer in front of the radiator in the dining room, I do have the heating on. I put it in our main living rooms as that is where the radiators are on most and it is the warmest
