I'm looking to buy a new feather duvet.

I would appreciate your recommendations. Thanks

I'm officially weird 😁 love the crunch.

I love the crunch too, it makes me feel like I'm in a posh hotel or something 😁

I want a new feather duvet but as a PP said, I think the only way to get a cruelty free, by-product one is to go for ethical which is obvs more expensive. I've read too much about the hideous cruelty of "live plucking" to be able to justify buying a cheap one now. I'm not the most ethical of shoppers, but cheap cashmere and cheap feather duvets are a line that now I can't cross.

@HairyHandedSonOfTroll I can't see the duvet company anywhere, only the duvet store ??

HairyHandedSonOfTroll · 19/10/2022 22:03

Yes - that's the one. I Googled it again after a PP mentioned it, and it's the Duvet Store. Though I also have one from Soak and Sleep.

I wouldn’t really say the meat industry and ethically sourced go together! And I wouldn’t say just because it’s already being killed then it’s grand to pluck it.

if you can by cruelty free, why not?

Feels like down

If you eat duck, there’s no difference. They don’t pluck live birds, it’s a by-product of the meat industry just as leather is.

They do pluck live birds.

GiantCheeseMonster · 19/10/2022 22:14

They don’t in the UK. Google it. If you buy a cheap Chinese import, maybe, but it’s perfectly possible to buy ethical down (assuming you’re OK with eating meat, obviously. If you’re vegetarian then you’re clearly not going to consider it ethical, but if you’re happy to eat duck then there’s no reason to object to a duvet and it’s arguably better for the environment than yet more polyester being produced).

They do. The feathers and down are ripped from the birds live and it causes them horrific pain and stress.
Ethically sourced are gathered as they moult or after the bird is dead.

MidnightConstellation · 19/10/2022 22:15

I got one from M and S recently. Delighted with it. It’s warm but not too heavy .

Which is why the feathers and down are nearly all brought in from countries that allow this practice.
I've yet to see one down or feather product sourced from this country. It's a long process.

As I have already said in the thread, it is perfectly possible to source ethical feather duvets. I wouldn’t buy meat from Thailand or China, any more than I would buy a duvet from there. British-made is not live plucked.

Really? Because I’ve just googled it and found loads of places I could order one from. Even ikea promise no live plucking in any of their products.

musicalfrog · 19/10/2022 22:23

Have you considered wool? Still natural but keeps its shape better than feather duvets and is great for regulating temperature.

We use Devon Duvets for ours.

Unforgettablefire · 19/10/2022 22:27

British made doesn't mean the fillings are British. They're brought in from abroad. Companies might be selling ethically sourced fillings in products but that doesn't mean they're U.K. grown.
You said they don't pluck live birds. They do.

allboysherebutme · 19/10/2022 22:33

The white company. X

chocochipcookie · 19/10/2022 23:02

I am looking for one too. I've had mine over ten years! Finally starting to get too patchy to provide warmth. I really don't like the synthetic materials, too light, not warm enough and a weird feeling I can't quite put my finger on.

You didn't mention British or ethical in the post I was responding to though. Talk about back pedalling!

Chloefairydust · 25/10/2022 20:04

My feather duvet and pillows are from John Lewis. Love them, they are soft, don’t have the feather smell, and the feathers don’t poke through the fabric. Best quality feather bedding I have ever bought.

TulipVictory · 25/10/2022 22:13

Purchased the M&S 13.5 tog one in store a few days ago and lovely and cosy. Tried to purchase online twice previously but kept going out of stock

I’ve just bought one too. It’s great.

spinachmonster · 25/10/2022 22:21

If you saw the birds being plucked live, I'm betting you wouldn't want one anymore 😭

You could go for one which is guaranteed not live plucked, but still I wouldn't take the risk. How do you know that's true/ not a marketing ploy like 'happy eggs'...They really do get away with murder the meat and dairy industry.

What are ethically sourced feathers?
