Smell of vomit in rug

inappropriateraspberry · 19/10/2022 11:38

My child was sick on Monday night all over our rug. I got out the crosswave and vacuumed it up, cleaned it with the machine then scrubbed it as well.
It still smelt yesterday, so got the carpet shampooer out last night. It has improved, but there is still a whiff of vomit when you're sat on the sofa! Any suggestions on how to get rid of it?
If it was summer I'd put the rug outside, but it's currently wet and miserable here.

Bicarbonate of soda? Sprinkle it on liberally and leave for as long as possible before hoovering up.

You can get pet and human urine eliminator sprays for fabrics. I’ve seen them on Amazon. They might work on sick too?

I would go with bicarb too. Leave it for a good few hours then vacuum up.

Yes to bicarb, especially if you drop a couple of drops of essential oil in the tub and give it a good shake, leave in the tub for a bit for it to absorb the smell then leave it on the rug for as long as possible before hoovering up -I mean a day or two rather than an hour or two. DS once vomited on our carpet & this worked after shampooing left a smell.

Is there carpet underneath or solid floor? The carpet may need doing too if there is one.

Ive used this on a fabric sofa mixed with shake n Vac and it worked well.

Biological washing powder (because it contains enzymes which break down the bacteria causing the smell) sprinkled onto dry carpet/rug, leave overnight or as long as possible and then vacuum up.

I have more washing powder than bicarbonate, so will try that overnight tonight.
Thanks for the suggestions, not sure why I didn't think of them!

Think I had to do the washing powder a couple of times over a few days to completely get rid of the smell but it did work. Good luck, nothing worse than the smell of sick!
