Pain in the arse dishwasher

I think I must be the only one with this (admittedly first world) problem. The bastard dishwasher regularly (around once a month) claims via an error code I had to look up on the internet rather than it being conveniently in the instructions, to have a blockage in the water outflow. This necessitates pulling out the dishwasher, unscrewing the feet and tipping it backwards to get rid of the water and, apparently, reset the 'flood switch' (accompanied by much muttering from DH and frantic mopping and towel positioning from me). It also invariably happens just as it has reached that part of the cycle when every item is dirtier than it went in. I've lost count of how many times we've had to manoeuvre the thing in and out. I've just had to wash every single item when I should have been languishing on the sofa with a glass of wine!

I asked the plumber if it could be a problem with our pipes but he didn't seem to think it was likely.

So should we cut our losses and get a new dishwasher? And if so which one? It's about 5 or 6 years old.

Any advice gratefully received!

We've got a small counter top dishwasher that does the same, DH is handy and put a small wedge under both front feet, it raises it a couple of cm but works just fine now.

I don't have a D/W. Threads like this top up my resolve not to bother.

in your case I would be checking the floor to see if it's properly flat & trying to chock up the front legs a bit. See if that helps. I'd be wary of just replacing it incase the new one would have the same issue.

Maybe it’s the inlet valve? Ours was not getting rid of the water at the end of the cycle, lots of YouTube vids
later I figured it was that, looked the part up, found it on amazon for £7, replaced it ourselves (although it took 4hrs and much muttering and swearing cos typically our machine design required the back, lid and sides to be taken off to access it but it was a bastard to try and get it all back together as the screw holes wouldn’t line up properly) ours still needs replacing, it’s started to not wash the top rack stuff properly, but by the time we do we probs have had an extra yrs use since our diy fix.

utimately if you have the money available it’s prob far less stressful just to buy another as it’s already 6 yrs old, I tend to find nowadays that’s the average lifespan of appliances in a busy household with multiple kids and adults.

Is it on an uneven floor or have the feet not been adjusted evenly? It sounds like it's tilted lower at the front so it thinks it's blocked because the water isn't running backwards/is pooling towards the door.

If you don't have a spirit level, you can use your phone - there are plenty of level apps for free - check it from left to right and from front to back.

I had an LG dishwasher that did similar, it didn't seem to be able to cope
with a single grain of rice or couscous! It was only 2 years old but I got sick of having to bail out filthy water and reset it all the time so I decided to cut my losses and got rid. I've had dishwashers for 20 years and never had a problem apart from this one, I replaced it with a Bosch which works perfectly.

When we had this I'd just scoop out the excess water from under the filter bit and it seemed to work.....

sproutsandparsnips · 15/10/2022 22:50

Thanks for all the very helpful suggestions! Would it not happen every time if it was the positioning? It seems to happen every few weeks. I will check this out though.
I am reluctant to buy a new one as it seems to be otherwise working ok, but DH said after the last time (and in fairness it's him that has to lie on the floor sweating and swearing while we manoeuvre it) that if it happened again we should get a new one.
I realise it's unreasonable to be so annoyed with an inanimate object but I get so cross with it!

Unfortunately, I can't see how to do this. I suppose I could try and syringe it out with the turkey baster.......

I agree with PPs that its probably not level. So over time the back wash accumulates and triggers the sensor. Use a spirit level to ensure it is level side to side and back to front.

Aconitum · 15/10/2022 22:57

Mine started to do this, randomly at first and then more regularly. An internet search revealed it could be one of four things wrong with so could end up costing more than it's worth to fix it.
As I am no longer at work, I have decided not to use it and haven't done for 6 months or more. I will get rid of it but unfortunately haven't got anything to go in the gap so it will sit there festering until I get some inspiration.

Aconitum maybe you should get a wine fridge.......
I shall take the good advice offered here tomorrow and get the spirit level out.
