Tell me what duvet I need

Need to replace my old flat duvet on king size bed. I want a warm, luxurious-looking duvet, the sort that rustles a little bit and that leaves a bit of an indent when you sit on it.

I don't want feather though, that's too crinkly and the feathers always poke out.

What do I need?

Well I’ve just replaced an old and much loved duvet. I tried pretty much every duvet in town.

If you don’t want feather do you want 100% down? Pricey and hot ime.

Otherwise all the microfibre ones are ‘feels like down’. The best of those are:

  • John Lewis “Soft Touch”
  • Fine Bedding Company “Spundown” or “Breathe”
  • White Company “Supersoft Ultra Wash Duvet” or “Hypoallergenic Soft and Light Breathable”.

You can also now get wool duvets (eg from Soak and Sleep) and Eucalyptus duvets.

"hotel" duvets.
Both Silentnight and Slumberdown do them.

We just bought a new duvet that is exactly as you describe.

Luxury Feels Like Down Duvet 10.5 tog king size... from George at Asda! Think it was £18!

I'm a bit old now and experimented with various duvets over the years. I've concluded that expensive duvets are a waste of money. I now have the cheapest duvets – £10 from Asda or Argos – as you honestly can't tell the difference as once you're in bed, as long as you have gorgeous bedlinen of course. Then also it's not a big drama if you spill your wine on it or the cat vomits on it.

I've just done a bit of research for you and can confirm that my £10 duvet rustles and leaves an indent when I sit on it, rather a huge one in my case.

RedeeeOrNot · 08/10/2022 13:17

George at Asda is brilliant for duvets and covers. I rate their towels highly too.

We have a Baavet medium weight wool duvet. It is very adaptable for the temperature, warm wet it's cold, cooler when it's hot. I love it, but it's definitely not big and fluffy or leaves and infect when out sit on it

Thank you all. And thanks for the indent research!! I have always bought relatively cheap ones previously, but over time find that they go very flat. Then I bought a relatively expensive feather and down one and hated it. Will try asda again perhaps!

Depends on how warm you like to be - 100% down is the only duvet I’ve ever had that has kept a hot water bottle by my feet warm til the next morning.

I need natural fibres definitely now as menopausal and it settles very lightly round you with no prickly bits. Expensive but better than made made fibres for me.

I've just bought two of th M&S 5.5 tog Supremely Washable duvets for my DS and DD , they love them.
If it gets really cold I'll add in their 4.6 tog to give them 12 tog

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/10/2022 19:37

7.5 tog M&S that should read !

John Lewis ones are very good value £35 for a Soft Touch double 10.5 tog duvet - and it comes with a 2 year guarantee. So if it goes flat you can complain!

I’m watching this thread with interest because I need a new duvet for spare room. Is 10.5 ok for spare bed in cold part of uk in winter? I need warmer, but I don’t want to have my visitors roasted.

IrisVersicolor · 11/10/2022 13:35

I’ve got 13.5 and I’m a very chilly person and it was too hot until recently. I should have bought 10.5. That’s the most versatile - on the coldest days you can add a blanket if necessary but it’s not too hot for autumn/spring.
