I’m relocating should I store my duvets or throw them out?

I’m relocating for a few years and not sure if I should store my duvets while I’m away. 6 years old but some rarely used and I change mine between summer and winter so not used all the time. Is it worth storing them or should I just throw them?

I would store them. Use the compression bags, not sure if that’s the actual name of them.

Cynderella · 03/10/2022 13:33

Is the storage going to cost you? If so, I'd sell them and replace if you're talking years.

DoodlePug · 03/10/2022 13:35

I'm usually very anti waste but am trying to remind myself that there are many types of waste including time, thought and space.

I say bin (recycle) them.

LadyEloise1 · 03/10/2022 13:37

@AdoraBell What compression bags work properly please ?
None have worked for me.

DoodlePug · 03/10/2022 13:42

@LadyEloise1 none of them work wellong term but if you buy from Lakeland they will at least replace if they're really bad. I have some good ones from there that keep their seal for months.

I would vacuum pack the ones you use regularly and store those (one for winter and one for summer) then get rid of the others.

purplecorkheart · 03/10/2022 13:45

Are you hiring a storage unit anyway? If then keep them and put them in vaccum bags

Pushyoupullme · 03/10/2022 14:25

I wouldn't, I'd replace them. Unless perhaps I had a very lightly used and very expensive one, I might store that. Ditto regarding the storage costs, these really mount up. And is the storage place, paid or not, going to keep them in good condition, dry and without possibility of condensation? If storing them make sure they are superdried out first. It would be best to launder or dry-clean them first too. All this mounts up costwise, especially dry cleaning.

As an aside I have never seen the point of really expensive duvets, or more-expensive-than-necessary pillows. They all ought to be replaced relatively often.

I would see if you can sell them. Likely to be a demand right now. Then, when you return, replace with wool duvets.

I need a storage unit anyway and it appears to be well maintained. It is marginal so if I run out of space these will be the first to go.
I cannot imagine anyone would want a second hand duvet

@leamington66 I think giving them away is fine, some charities will be very grateful for them. (Homeless shelters/womens aid) also animal sanctuaries/vets etc.

i never bothered vacuum packing them, I just used them as packaging around lamps/mirrors etc & had them cleaned when unpacked.

cravattwat · 03/10/2022 17:32

Animal charities will be grateful for them. In my experience, refuges and shelters wouldn't use second hand bedding.

leamington66 · 03/10/2022 17:37

good idea about wrapping. I am going to put my glassware in the same box :-)
