Getting rid of smell of cat

myhousesmellsofcat · 14/09/2022 08:49

I have visitors arriving on Friday.

My cat pees in inappropriate places when she is stressed. My house smells of cat.

I have seven hours today to get my house smelling sweet and fresh.

The bedroom my visitors will be sleeping in is out of bounds to the cat, so it is fine, just needs dusted and hoovered.

Help!

Unless you use an enzyme spray you will not remove the smell. If you can get to pets at home you can buy some. Then spray the area with Cif or flash spray first and wipe them out on the enzyme spray. If you absolutely can’t get any then Cif kitchen power is very effective. You can’t mask the smell. If you have essential oils or even fabric conditioner you can drop some (slightly diluted) onto your radiators and blast then for an hour! And put drops of essential oils into the edges of carpets. But basically air and enzyme cleaner.

Part of the problem is that I'm not too sure where the smell is coming from. If I know she's peed, I clean it immediately with one of the sprays for pet urine.

I've started the major clean by cleaning my porch. I'm sure it doesn't smell of cat (the door is open enough for it to be well aired) but now it smells slightly of lemon floor cleaner.

First impressions and all that.

I'm about to tackle the living room, which does smell.

If you generally clean area as soon as she goes then I would just use the pet stuff in every corner of living room as precaution.

when dry you can sprinkle bicarb on carpets or rugs. If helps absorb smell. Leave an hour or so then Hoover it all back up

leave all windows open as much as possible.

wash any blankets/ cushions

I've had the windows wide open since 10am, and the settee throw and all the cushions are airing on the washing line.

I've dusted, polished all the furniture, the Roomba is doing his bit. I'll spray once the Roomba has finished.

I won't know whether it's worked till the windows are shut.

It's too late now, but you need to buy a black light and find the places she pees in. Then use enzyme spray- unless a cleaner says it's an enzyme cleaner it won't do the job.

I have a black light, but it's not really showing up much.

I've been cleaning up every time it happens, but maybe only with 90% success. Enough that it showing up under black light but not enough to keep the house smelling fresh.

All the windows are wide open so I'm not smelling cat at the moment. I'm going out for dinner, so I'll close the windows before I go, and see how it is when I get home.

I'm currently using the Rug Doctor Urine Eliminator spray, which has enzymes.

Essential oils can be toxic to cats.
