Fabric conditioner not allowed - what else softens post wash?

My son's accommodation don't allow fabric conditioner in their machines and he really needs his clothes to be soft, as he is hyper-sensitive. There's no detergent drawer, so he was going to use something like Bold 3, but is there something additional he could use (in the drum or after washing, whilst drying) to make it super soft? Many thanks in advance 😊

Isn't vinegar meant to be a good substitute? Apparently the smell disperses

twilightcafe · 13/09/2022 16:00

White vinegar works.

Do not use malt vinegar (like Sarsons) unless you want to smell like a chip shop.

BruceAndNosh · 13/09/2022 16:01

I never use fabric softener and only things that I line dry are stiff.
Tumble drying makes them soft

Ponderingwindow · 13/09/2022 16:02

Is he tumble drying?
if so, get him a bunch of wool drier balls. They work wonders

ItsRainingPens · 13/09/2022 16:03

I would be reluctant to use a shared machine, with skin problems. There will be all kinds of residue in there from other people's washes

Same as this. Its the drying method that makes the biggest difference

Magenta82 · 13/09/2022 16:06

Would he be allowed dryer sheets, they work well instead of softener.

Willdoitlater · 13/09/2022 16:31

Depends where he's living. If it's a soft water area he won't need anything.

Mrsjayy · 13/09/2022 16:34

Get him to buy surf 2 in 1 washing powder and maybe dryer sheets but the dryer will soften his clothes up .

LIZS · 13/09/2022 16:35

Can he tumble dry? Dc were not allowed dryer sheets or colour catchers. Some tabs contain softener.

FuncaMunca · 13/09/2022 16:37

Dryer sheets for the tumble dryer

Calmed · 13/09/2022 16:39

Thanks all for your responses.

He can't tumble dry as pretty much most of his clothes will shrink. He'll be hanging them up to dry inside.

And it says that the water is very hard!

make sure he leaves a window open then.
some people don't realise that mold may occur otherwise. and bad for one's chest.

Quveas · 13/09/2022 16:50

Several options here:

LIZS · 13/09/2022 16:56

A quick run over with a steam iron might help!

Calmed · 13/09/2022 17:03

Thank you again. As there's no dispenser, some of the tips wouldn't work, but I'm going to look into adding bicarbonate of soda to the drum, before adding the clothing, as it says that's also good for the machine, so the company shouldn't grumble either 😊 I'll give it a go at home first, but our water is soft, so it won't be a true indication, but hopefully better than nothing. Thanks for the link 😊

Mrsjayy · 13/09/2022 17:09

He can "'scoosh" some white vinegar into the drum along with his pods if there is no dispenser.

Calmed · 13/09/2022 17:12

Thanks - I'll try that too 😊

does he have access to a tumble dryer?
of a washing line outside? the action makes a difference.
ironing does something for softness also.

my washing machine manual says not to use vinegar as it can corrode the insides. if softener is not allowed then I would suspect vinegar would be a no as well.

hedgehoglurker · 14/09/2022 16:38

The only other things I can think of is using a garment steamer (similar result to ironing) or a water softening product like calgon/ soda crystals in the wash.

I assume they don't allow softener as it can clog the drawer and increase mildew.

FrogFairy · 15/09/2022 13:06

I would try soda crystals rather then bicarbonate of soda.

GlitterB0mb · 15/09/2022 13:07

Water softening tablets help a lot

Mol1628 · 15/09/2022 13:10

Soda crystals. Really good for a hard water area.

Dustnbones · 15/09/2022 13:40

I use Ecover liquid and the clothes stay soft even when line dried - I put it in the drum. It’s not cheap but often is on offer at 1/3rd off
