you may have to do it a couple of times for the first wash (if your carpets are older). i do mine about once every few months. less in winter though. i have a pale beige carpet that shows off every mark.

lailasmum · 22/01/2008 20:13

we only did ours about once or twice a year.

babyjjbaby · 22/01/2008 20:22

thanks ours are burgandy down stairs so don't really get dirty but we have dogs so they must be filthy i was thinking about every 3 months or so and upstairs it would depnd how dirty they got cos i have been told that once u clean them they tend to show the dirt up more

Hi, I have just bought a Bissell cleaner...again gone halves with my Mum like you...ours is a reconditioned one from a company on ebay...it arrived yesterday, its like new...and I am so impressed. We have 2 dogs, so I'm thinking will be using it as and when needed. Tried it in the hallway last night, carpet now looks like new, beautiful smell, and almost dry when done !!

babyjjbaby · 23/01/2008 11:27

i am gonna go and do the carpet in my room again got a lot of dirt out of it last night but it has been down for 13years atleast so needs going over again and probably again after that aswell i was really shocked at what it got out

we have a vax and use it every couple of months or so, especially on our deep pile rug as it seem to get dirty. I am always impressed at the muck that comes out. biggest regret is getting a n upright one without a hose so we cant do stairs Doh!

babyjjbaby · 23/01/2008 11:32

i was lucky the one i got has got a hose aswell but i don't think it is that good

I got a vax recently and was horrified at what came out of the carpets - I lent it to my Mum, and haven't seen it since!

opps - was just about to point out that they are £80 on amazon Sammysam, then read up and saw you have got one. Oh well - for anyone else who is interested vax. We got one a couple of weeks ago.
We had our carpets done professionally about 14mo ago and it was amazing how good they came up - especially the bloody stain that had been on my bedroom floor for 10mo after I had ds2.
The home ones don't do as good a job - but are cheaper . They are also great for clearing up vomit episodes.

OriginalUglyBetty · 25/01/2008 22:27

I have the same bissell as JigglyJen, its marv i have cream carpets in all bedrooms and a light beige in the lounge(sharp intake of breath here- and a Cream sofa! - yes with a dog and two children i must have been mad. However its great gets everywhere almost dry and aslong as i clean every 3 months with my bisssell it all looks clean.

callmeovercautious · 27/01/2008 20:43

A really good thread as I have been looking at getting one of these. They both look good! I may even ask my Mum if she wants to go halfs as well Thanks Ladies.

I 'bisselled' my living room carpet Friday night & it looks a completely different colour. V pleased.

It's not got out all the marks my dh's dark jeans have left but has got all the others and it has saved me a lot of money as I was having to get the carpet 'professionally' cleaned x2 a year but actually I think it does a better job. I clean the living carpet 3-4 times a year (messiest toddler dd ever!) and the upstairs once a year.

It removes all marks from shoes, food etc and also gets up those annoying little bits the vacuum cleaner leaves behind.

I would say however that the machine is gradually becoming less efficient over time (about the 6th or 7th time I've used it) and you can get irritating problems with air locks. Also check out the cost of the cleaning fluid as that is pretty pricey.

And for the money it cost to buy, I didn't expect to have to assemble it!

However, in the long run far better results and cheaper than having it done professionally done or cost of replacing the carpet.

I hired out a 'rug doctor' from our local sketchley's over christmas to clean our carpets. It was fantastic and has a hose so cleaned the stairs as well. I found the carpets took alot less time to dry then a vax and it only cost £30 to hire for 3 days and the fluid wasn't that expensive either. I noticed B&Q also hire out the machine but not sure of cost. I plan to hire it out a couple of times a year.

babyjjbaby · 28/01/2008 21:49

i have done all the carpets in our house bar one room i am very happy with it but would look into getting a leaner which has scotchguard in it the only think which is annoying is the hose is not long enough to get up the stairs we have 12 steps but only goes up bout 7 of them but other than that veyr pleased
