No smart meter- how to manage energy consumption

Is there some sort of device that will tell me the amount of kWh etc that each appliance uses? We are with Eon but for some reason don't have a smart meter (looking into that).

Any ideas welcome on how to determine where the chunky usage is being incurred would be great.

Have a Google of "energy monitor plug".
You basically put it between the existing plug and socket, and it will give you a read out. It does rely on the current socket being accessible rather than tricky to access tho.

Most appliances can be looked up online. I looked up my compact freezer and found it costs me roughly £40 a year at the moment.

Chunky usage is where you heat or cool. Oven, hob, tumble drier, electric shower. Freezer, air con. Etc...

Anything that heats or cools will use the most energy. I'm sure it's showers and the oven that costs us the most in electricity

You can use this energy calculator for basic appliances.

www.sust-it.net/energy-calculator.php

You put in the W or kW and the time used and it tells you how much it costs to run. There is a drop down to select different tariffs and average price to reflect different situations eg I'm on a price fix until next year, but my mum's has just ended so she's on variable. I'm using Aug 2021 average, she's using Oct price cap in the menu.

Someone on another thread has pointed out that it isn't much use for larger appliances such as ovens, fridges and washing machines as they cost isn't consistent depending on the cycle of use. There should be info in the manual about usage.

There's a how much does this cost to run thread which has been very useful for information.
