Suggestions for keeping white clothes white

Particularly white socks and sportswear. I do a separate white wash but looking for suggestions on what I can add for stain removal/whitener that works to keep them looking clean and not dull.

I add Vanish and do whites at 60c even when the label says 40c

bellac11 · 21/08/2022 22:44

I dont know how people keep their whites white. I admit that we dont do a whites wash, I ask my OH to do this but he doesnt do I think, I havent caught him in the act yet, but everything is sort of a grey off white so I dont belive he does

I dont understand people on here when they say they bung it all in and it looks fine.

Absolutely strict whites only washes. Long 60 degree wash (lots of soaking)in biological powder. Hang out in the sunshine - it really works.

Cynderella · 21/08/2022 23:16

Definitely whites only (I didn't bother for years, but can see the difference it makes now).

I use a mix of Ariel, soda crystals, soap and (if really dirty and/or stained) Napisan at 40 degrees for normal and 60deg for dirty/stained. Every couple of months, I do a 90 deg wash, mostly for the good of my machine, but everything comes out dazzling.

White wash, bio powder and Sunlight

We used non buo for ages because of allergies but kids have grown out of that, bio has made a massive difference

Butterfly44 · 22/08/2022 06:51

Great suggestions thank you. I've been doing wash at 40, so will increase and try some of these.

@bellac11 I used to do a mixed wash for ease but whites greyed. Doing them separately definitely makes a difference.

Can i ask what bio powder you are all using ? The Tesco one I used to buy isn’t available any more.

KangarooKenny · 22/08/2022 06:54

And is there any magic cure for sports socks that have dirty stained feet ?

lickenchugget · 22/08/2022 06:55

Yep, white only wash, higher temp, vanish in the wash occasionally and always dry in sunlight - same goes for getting stains out.

carefullycourageous · 22/08/2022 06:56

Agree whites only and drying outside.

Have to be realistic though, the shop white is unsustainable.

StopStartStop · 22/08/2022 07:00

Was talking to someone about the 'old days' when we were young mothers. She washed socks in Napisan, it kept them glowing white. I'd never heard that before. Don't know if it's still going...

KangarooKenny · 22/08/2022 07:03

I thought Napisan was a mild bleach, and you use it as a pre soak. Not sure how you would wash with it 🤔

StopStartStop · 22/08/2022 13:22

I have no idea. She was very sure it was Napisan.

mrssunshinexxx · 22/08/2022 14:59

@KangarooKenny I just put nappy san in the drawer with the wash powder

Is that for whites only ?

Cantreadwontread · 22/08/2022 15:08

Whites only washes at hot temps. Socks, towels and similar “dirty whites” completely separate from “nice whites” like shirts, tees and trousers.

Wearing shoes in the house Grin

mrssunshinexxx · 23/08/2022 23:18

Anything stained @KangarooKenny but that means usually white stuff yeah but I don't seperate

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/08/2022 19:38

I have white towels, bed linen and tea towels. I wash on 40 with Daz, everything stays white. Might chuck in some Tesco brand oxyclean stuff if I think it needs it.

BerthaBetty · 25/08/2022 13:33

Pre soak in cold water and fairy liquid. Grate in some of the vanish bar of soap into your drum with the washing.
