I can’t stick to a cleaning routine

Help! I’m really struggling to stick to a cleaning routine, actually I just struggle with routine in general. How do you manage, do you follow the same daily routine each day? Thanks :-)

Fuck the routine amd just do a little of whst needs doing most each day

Why do you need a cleaning routine?! I tend to just clean stuff if I happen to notice it needs doing at the same time I have a moment to sort it.

When I'm struggling I try and do 60-90 mins on a Monday morning along the lines of the Flylady home blessing. I do:

  • tidy and dust living room
  • vacuum all downstairs quickly
  • spray mop kitchen floor
  • wipe over loos and give sinks a good scrub
  • empty bins
  • one more thing as needed, eg bathroom floors, kitchen sink & surfaces, mirrors, or a couple of windows.

I then try and follow TOMM loosely (I do bathrooms instead of hall as my hall is so tiny) but if it doesn't happen, things still stay more or less on track.

I find TOMM very useful.
I (nearly always) do the level 1 jobs and feel I’ve achieved something if I’ve done a little bit of level 2, but it doesn’t happen everyday.

Have you ever looked into adult ADHD?

I find the podcasts by A Slob Comes Clean really helpful. I started at the beginning. She waffles a lot, but it's OK. She is good for people who struggle with routine, and explains a lot of the thinking errors "slob brains" tend to make, like thinking it will be more efficient if I wait and do it all in one go or that's not worth doing yet. Also the despair when a routine fails - apparently normal people just get up and carry on instead of trying to reinvent the wheel like I do 😅

I do need to have a routine as "just doing what needs doing" isn't obvious or easy for me and I will get into a mess not really being able to prioritise effectively. And lists like MM's are no use because they assume a base level of what I now think of as "pre-cleaning". So my routine is the pre-cleaning stuff and it means if I need to clean, I can instead of having to do loads of extra stuff first making the task exhausting.
