Washing liquid that leaves your clothes smelling fabulous

After a disappointing experience with a supermarket own brand that left my clothes smelling the same as when they went into the machine dirty, what liquids will make my washing smell glorious?

I personally don’t like my clothes to smell of washing product. I says to me that they’ve not been rinsed properly and are therefore still biologically unclean however much faux lychee and coconut you can whiff!

womaninatightspot · 10/08/2022 12:35

I thought Aldi lavender liquid smelt lovely but I noticed gunk building up at the seal switched to Aldi lavender powder and laundry still smells lovely and the seals are spotless.

Bonesofache · 10/08/2022 14:34

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll buy a few and test them out over the next few weeks.

I will also give my machine a good wash. I bought a pack of cleaning stuff especially for washing machines last week but need a chance to scrub the seal and drawer first.

I use non-bio. I don't know why, just got into the habit when my kids were born because that was recommended to me at the time. Does it make a difference?

Persia bio powder + blue Comfort and line dry. Beautiful,

SalviaOfficinalis · 10/08/2022 14:45

The stuff about non-bio being better for babies was a myth spread by the washing powder companies for marketing purposes. It doesn’t really exist in other countries.

The myth was so widespread that NHS guidance did used to recommend non-bio, but the evidence base for this claim was challenged by mumsnetters, and the NHS realised that it wasn’t based on any evidence. The NHS website now says either are fine.

Unfortunately I can’t find the link for where I read the above originally, so hopefully my recollection is accurate.

Bio washing powder contains enzymes, which break down stains etc and clean very effectively.

Persil powder for me always smells lovely

cherrypiepie · 10/08/2022 16:33

Lenor yellow is called happy and I have just used the first bottle and it's amazing. Usually use the Aldi one. Still use that Aldi powder.

Take out the drawer and give it a really good scrub and then dry and work out how the conditioner is dispensers from the drawer. Mine was a hidden pipe in the underside of the drawer and it was full of black slime mould Envy. Used a skewe r and bottle brush to clean it. Then also before putting it back check the drawer housing - also full of mould and the seal.

Our machine is a 10 year old Miele so doing ok just a bit of elbow work cleaning al the hidden bits .

Quite a new discovery for me but Surf Deep Sea Minerals.

lickenchugget · 10/08/2022 17:09

On rotation -

Blue Comfort
Lavender Bold
Yellow Lenor
Spring Bold
Fairy

The shorter washes on my machine come out smelling more too.

MuddlerInLaw · 10/08/2022 17:15

I use Ecover biological powder. And really notice the difference when I come into contact with other people’s freshly laundered but horribly artificially over-perfumed clothes.

(Also most other things make me itchy.)

Hugasauras · 10/08/2022 17:17

I really like smell of the Fairy non-bio pods.

DarlingCoffee · 14/08/2022 16:41

Fairy

Lunificent · 14/08/2022 16:46

I dislike the smell of Lenor. To me it has a kind of meaty chemical smell. I used to prefer Comfort but then they appeared to change the formula so there was the same chemical smell as Lenor.
I like all of the supermarkets’ own brand extra special ones. They tend to smell quite perfumey and floral. At the moment I’m using a Morrison’s one and it’s lovely.I use Ariel Liquitabs to wash.

MissyB1 · 14/08/2022 16:52

Dreft - the liquid and the softener. I’ve only found it in Waitrose and it’s not cheap but smells amazing!
If I’m cost cutting though it has to be fairy.

familyissues12345 · 14/08/2022 17:02

I really like the Ecover non bio powder, eucalyptus one. My utility room smells good!

JadeSeahorse · 14/08/2022 17:09

Several PP's have mentioned Surf coconut.
I use Aldi's own coconut crush powder along with Morrisons cheap blue fabric conditioner.

Smells wonderfully fresh and I now wash most things on 20 degree economy cotton programme but ALWAYS add laundry disinfectant too.

(I also wipe all seals after every wash, keep the detergent drawer spotless and always keep the machine door open between washes.)

Beamur · 14/08/2022 17:10

Any bio powder and usually a Lenor softener. Blue or the Febreze one is fresh smelling, occasionally the Gold or Love but they are quite perfumed. Feeling frugal recently and bought Lidl bio powder and Doussy softener and they are actually really nice together. Pleasantly clean smelling but not artificial or intense.

Wateringthegarden · 14/08/2022 18:00

I like Daz that we use as a treat. The little pouch the powder doesn't smell as good.

Otherwise we use lidl or aldi bio powder.

MuddlerInLaw · 14/08/2022 19:20

Don’t think I’ve used a softener or fabric conditioner this century. My laundry is all perfectly fine without. (And I really dislike softened towels - they don’t do anything.)

allboysherebutme · 14/08/2022 23:09

Asevi or colon with nenuco fabulous smells, if you have a local market you maybe able to get it there if not on line. X

PoppyLupin · 14/08/2022 23:12

I like Daz and Fairy liquid

AppleBottomRats · 14/08/2022 23:15

Unscented detergent and drying on the line to make them smell genuinely fresh. All detergent scents have that horrible sickly artificial smell to them and are best avoided.

I love their talco rose scent, it's amazing

I agree. When I smell people who wreak of fabric conditioner it isn’t pleasant to me.

Method lavender liquid smells incredible (though not particularly like lavender).

I stopped buying it because it’s quite expensive but still get the occasional waft of it on clothes that have been in the wardrobe and get a compulsion to sniff them. So good.

When you say it doesn't smell of lavender , what does it smell like ?

I really really don;t like lavender and I wouldn't even open the bottle to sniff it but if it smells nice (in a non lavendery way Grin ) I might .

I use Sainsbury powders - colour /Bio/Non Bio depending on what I;m washing and Method Tropical Coconut conditioner .
