HELP it stinks

The cat knocked a pint of exante diet shake over behind my desk. I pulled out my workstation and had to clean the wall, carpet and computer stuff; ran the carpet cleaner over it. However over a few months the carpet has smelt worse and worse I'm not kidding like a rotting corpse.
I've checked the entire room to check there isn't a dead rodent anywhere. It's definitely the carpet.
What can I do to get rid of the awful stink. Any ideas? It's like a rotting milk smell. Awful.

I would make a paste with bicarb and rub it on. Then hoover once dried.

I had something similar when my youngest spilled milk on the carpet - I was washed the carpet and thought it was gone but the smell was horrendous a few days later. I tried lots of different things but the smell would always come back, in the end what worked was sprinkling bi carb on brushing it in and leaving it over night and hoovering the next morning, followed by spraying the whole area with white vinegar. Hope this helps, I feel for you because it’s horrible!!

It sounds liked it's gone through to the underlay. Pull the carpet up at the edge and clean the stain underneath with a mixture of half water half white vinegar.
Blot it as dry as possible. Once finished sprinkle a good covering of bicarb of soda on it and leave to dry with the carpet pulled back for a couple of days then hoover the bicarb and refit the carpet. Repeat the process on the carpet once is back down being careful not to get it too wet.

Bicarbonate of soda 100%- works like a dream!

Biological washing powder. The enzymes will break down the matter and bacteria. Alternatively boiling hot water or ideally a steamer, again the temperature will kill the bacteria that's causing the smell. Obviously you need to test the suitability of both for your surfaces or materials as they may not do well, but I can say I have treated milk spills like this a couple of times and it's worked great

Thanks so much. I have a steamer in the loft I'd forgotten about and I'll try all the others too. The smell is in my bedroom so sleeping is difficult especially in the heat.
