Smelly bin bags and flies

Amichelle84 · 02/08/2022 20:10

Looking for something I can spray on full bin bags to stop the smell, and to deter flies.

I double bag them and they stay on our balcony until bin day, we are in a flat and don't have big plastic bins to put them in.

With this hot weather they really smell despite being double or some triple bagged. This is attracting flies and we've been getting maggots 🤮

For context we have 2 babies, I have a stoma and we have a house cat so there is a lot of pooh being disposed of.

Your block of flats doesn’t have a skip area to take rubbish to?

Amichelle84 · 02/08/2022 20:15

No

We do have one of those but it fits in 2 bags max so we overflow (not enough room for another). Thought there may be some kind of spray on the market that could help tackle the problem

There’s no spray I know of.
I think it’s awful there is no skip for the block. Is there a residents committee or something? It’s ridiculous to have to keep all your rubbish in your flat until bin day. Makes your balcony un-usable. Perhaps the committee can make a complaint to the council?

Have you tried Bin Buddy? It's powder and can repel flies so no maggots. It's scented too.

You need something with citronella in it. It really helps with flies.

Chattycathydoll · 02/08/2022 23:08

Another vote for bin buddy. The lavender one smells lovely!

BobaTea · 03/08/2022 15:56

The citrus one smells lovely too. Just bought a tub today.

Amichelle84 · 03/08/2022 17:58

Fab! Going to try the bin buddy :)

Have you considered emptying the soiled nappies down the loo?
Obviously no good with newborns but once their poo is solid I used to just knock the poo into the toilet and then bin the nappy.
Cuts down on the smells massively.

Do you get bags for your stoma? My dad gets fragranced/neutralising ones, which might help.

I'd also consider contacting your council, explaining the situation and asking about outside bins.

BiscoffSundae · 03/08/2022 18:05

There’s not a rubbish chute where you can put them? Never known a flat like that where do you put the bags on bin day just on the street?

BiscoffSundae · 03/08/2022 18:06

Could you buy your own wheelie bin you can buy ones online

AdoraBell · 03/08/2022 18:09

I second citronella.

Swannning · 03/08/2022 18:13

I second dropping the poo down the loo, it cuts down the smells massively.

Davyjones · 03/08/2022 18:14

I’d opt for not using big bags and using smaller bags that can be disposed of quicker until the weather passes

Davyjones · 03/08/2022 18:15

Scented small bin liners

fortifiedwithtea · 03/08/2022 18:28

How many other residents? Is there a management company? Are the residents part owners of the freehold, do you have a residence committee

As a group you are stronger as one voice . Get together and write to your local authority and get some bins.

lastminutedotcom22 · 03/08/2022 21:53

Do you rent or own? I'd consider moving somewhere with adequate bins as that sounds awful and it's a shame as ideally you'd want to be sat out on your balcony not with a load of bin bags.

If it's a council property they have a legal obligation to make sure there's bins in the interests of public health and also I'd be getting your HV to write a letter of support to the council housing officer to get you moved

If you rent privately I'd be looking at another rental

If you own speak to the local council and explain the situation

I really feel for you this sounds terrible bless your

We have recently purchased a pull out bin but cannot find the liners hence I reach to you all for enlightenment. The bin is 45 long, 25cm wide and 45cm deep please can you help after fruitless searching online 😊
