Window cleaner cracked window!

A window cleaner has been this morning for a one off clean before we put our house up for sale. I’ve gone downstairs to check and there is a huge crack in the window now that wasn’t there before!

He was leaning over the neighbours fence cleaning the window with a broom which I wasn’t hugely impressed with to start with. I have messaged his wife who does the admin for him and she has said he will call in on his way home. Where do I stand in terms of making him pay & replace the window? Will it be a big job? Do you think he will try and say it was there already…

he should have liability insurance, if he’s a legitimate business.

You should contact you home insurance, they can chase his liability insurance for payment, you shouldn’t have to do the chasing.

As predicted, he is saying he hasn’t done it. Any idea where that leaves me in terms of home insurance ?

I don’t think there is anything you can do unless you have concrete proof it was him

He is free to lie and say it wasn’t him.
you are free to say you were in the room when it happened and watching him break it I with the broom,
it’s his word against yours, and you know he is lying.

you are going to have to go through your insurance company though.

This shouldn't cost too much to fix, don't worry. They don't need to replace the whole frame, just the glass. Massive pain though!

Just call a window fitter & get it replaced. They'll come & check the size and it's a 10 minute job to pop out the pane and replace it.

The excess on the insurance will be more than the window cost.

Your window cleaner will be kicking himself though cos you'll not use him again and I'm sure word will get round about this.

As above, get a price first as having it done yourself may well be less than your excess. You can still take it up with the window cleaner.
There are lots of places that will manufacture / sell you a replacement sealed unit and when it is ready it is the work of a few minutes to replace.
