How to deal wtih Cat Pee on Rug?

irridium · 30/07/2022 22:25

My poorly cat had started to toilet in the house due to too many cats in the garden making him fearful to use. He started to poo and wee in the corner of the room next to the piano about 5 times. I used soapy water and kitchen spray initially to scrub it clean and then found a product Beckhams or something specifically for pet odour. The room still has a musty, fusty animal smell to it, and I'm wondering how I can rid of this? Can anyone help, please?

Thanks.

Have you now put a litter tray in the corner where he has been going to the toilet. Unless you have great sentimental attachment to your rug I would just bin it if the smell isn't coming out in the wash or its too big to wash.

Discovereads · 30/07/2022 22:29

You need to remove carpet and underlay, spray floor boards with enzyme and put down new carpet and underlay.

put a litter box in the corner. Your cat shouldn’t have been using your garden as a toilet anyway

Professional rug cleaner to do a full immersion clean in a dedicated rug workshop. Not cheap though

irridium · 30/07/2022 22:37

He's started to use the new litter tray that's by the back door, so the issue with him toilteting has stopped, thank goodness.

I would like to keep the rug (Afghan repro) ideally. What kind of enzyme do I use? What about the carpet cleaner that you can hire from certain supermarkets; do they work?

Hi OP, what you need is this.

Simple Solution Extreme Cat Stain and Odour Remover | Enzymatic Cleaner with 3X Pro-Bacteria Cleaning Power - 500ml amzn.eu/88DA3qT

And you need to completely soak the area of carpet/rug where they urinated. So it is soaking all the way through all the layers. Then just leave it to dry. It will take a while, a few days to completely dry and the smell should be gone.

znmakab · 30/07/2022 22:51

I've not needed to use a carpet cleaner when I have used this.

Why can't the cat use her garden as a toilet?

It’s disgusting. And spreads disease like toxoplasmosis and E. coli.
Better not grow any herbs or veg in your garden if it’s also a cat toilet.

Enzyme depends on what your rug is made of. I’d call a professional tbh.

Sims400 · 30/07/2022 23:03

Not sure what to do about your rug, but I have the pet rug doctor for any accidents, I thought it was pricey, but I wouldn’t be without it now. It’s been great for odd accidental spills in the house, as well as the cat chucking up randomly.

MammaWeasel · 30/07/2022 23:05

Have you tried bicarbonate of soda sprinkled liberally in the area then left for a few days before vacuuming?

Yet I have multiple cats, grow herbs and veg, and have never had e coli or toxoplasmosis. It's a miracle!

Hmm

Are your cats shitting in your garden or your neighbours? Cats should be toilet trained. To just let them out to shit wherever is medieval level hygiene.

znmakab · 30/07/2022 23:29

@Discovereads what about all the other wildlife that is busy pooping in your garden? 😂 you sound a bit paranoid to be honest.

znmakab · 30/07/2022 23:32

@Discovereads

"Enzyme depends on what your rug is made of. I’d call a professional tbh."

No it doesn't, the enzyme treats the protein in the urine, not the fabric of the rug 🙄 You need a cat urine specific enzyme like I have linked above.

justasking111 · 30/07/2022 23:32

You don't want to know what's in bird poop. Really you don't 🙈

It's the funniest response, does @Discovereads think all our fruit and veg is grown in covered sterile greenhouses and not open fields 😂🥴

You can think that way but certain enzymes will destroy a wool rug but are perfectly safe on a polypropylene rug.

It’s not paranoia. Cat feces carry toxoplasmosis which can cause miscarriage in pregnant women and be fatal to children.

There is also the E. coli., which can also be fatal to children.

Laugh all you want but the mother who gave her 3yo a homemade smoothie with homegrown spinach and killed her child because she thought just like you that cat shit in her spinach bed was perfectly safe. She’s not laughing, now is she?

Says someone who obviously has never been on a working farm in a life. Hint: there are not herds of cats shitting in the fields. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I have 2 massive litter trays. They're never used unless they're shut in the house

irridium · 01/08/2022 21:00

My cat used to toilet outside for the past three years since I've had him, but with the neighbour's 4 cats terrorising him, he doesn't go out anymore. He's taken to using the litter tray, but only seems to go in and relieves himself in the door entrance rather than turning round and doing it at the end. How do I get him to do that - do I take off the hood?

@Discovereads I'll try find the label to see if it's wool or not. I bought it for about £500 in the half-price sale.

I've used the simple solution a number of times and I have to say to my mind there is still a smell that remains after use 😬 Whether it's cat wee or just the product I don't know 🤷

Once you've used it try spraying white vinegar on it - that's definitely helped me in the past.

irridium · 08/08/2022 21:17

@Logoplanter just using pure white vinegar? would it not whiff of vinegar, though?

Thanks.

OP posts:
Logoplanter · 09/08/2022 07:38

We've found that initially it smells of vinegar but that vanishes after a day or two. Using both products together has been the most effective for us. We've also tried using bicarbonate of soda which was good, but not as effective as the white vinegar although it may be if you persevere with it.

Maybe try it somewhere inconspicuous and see what you think.
