Don't understand gas oven!

I've just moved house and there is a gas oven in place, never had one of these before and we've been trying it out.
In the oven the flame is not visible - how do you know whether or not it's lit? Haven't used it for cooking yet because we just don't know when it's lit.
We've used the grill, the flame lights, but the flame just seemed to go out spontaneously twice while making cheese on toast, we had to watch it like a hawk. Surely that isn't normal?
We're reluctant to use the oven because what if the flame went out while cooking? My husband has no sense of smell so he's very cautious to use it.

You should see a flame in a gas cooker and if the grills going off and on you probably should get it checked out

The flame should be on othereise its just gas coming out, what oven is it. I would call an oven or gas company in to check it before you use it again.

Thanks - I had a check again, because I want to check this is actually what's happening before contacting a gas engineer.
The oven flame is actually visible and I was looking in the wrong place.
For the grill, the flame only goes out when you close the door actually, not spontaneously. And the door says 'grill with door open'. So I assume that's MEANT to happen.
So my question is - if the grill turns off when you shut the door, and that's intentional, but the knob is still pointing to the number of course because you haven't turned it off, is the gas still coming out? How do you know whether gas is coming out?

It sounds like a safety cut off, can you look at the manual. Id have thought the knob has to be turned off. I wouldnt test if gas is still coming out.

@tingalayo can you Google for the manual for your oven? It probably has a sticker with a code on it somewhere - mine is visible when you open the grill/top oven door

If your DH has no sense of smell I would look into getting a different oven tbh. The main way you can tell the gas is on is by smell, although you can hear it if you know what you're listening for.
