fill the kettle and boil it up with clear/white wine vinegar and then leave to sit over night. In the morning, empty and rinse it very thoroughly and boil it again with water. Also works for shower heads which are clogged if you have a plasic bag filled with vinegar and put it over the shower head with an elastic band

i heard of this method but I'm worried that the kettle might go bang while having the vinegar in it boiling. You'll be laughing at me but I once tried to clean the kettle with washing up liquid, put it on and bang - bye bye kettle.

Can't think why it would - surely no different to boiling the kettle with water in it?

candypandy · 17/01/2008 07:44

I would say you don't even have to boil it. we live in an extremely hard water area and have to de-calc nearly every week. We use cold white vinegar.. soak for an hour. White vinegar is so cheap you can use loads and loads.

Thank you, I'll try.

And afterwards invest in a Brita water filter and you won't have to do it again.

Iota · 17/01/2008 12:15

when you have cleaned it put one of these in it to prevent further build up

Iota · 17/01/2008 12:15

or get a Brita filter as Buda suggested ( we use one)

fedda · 17/01/2008 16:31

Iota, that's what is in my kettle and it didn't help.

i just whack it out with a knife. our water is really hard. i wonder what it does to our insides

crumpet · 17/01/2008 16:34

Didn't bother boiling ours - just filled it with normal brown vinegar (had a huge platic bottle of it) and left it over night last night. Looked like new today.

I did try and boil vinegar in the kettle once and had a sort of volcanic effect - gross fish & chip foam all over the place and it stank!

Another vinegar user but I heat it up (try to avoid reaching a boil) with only about 3 oz vinegar in, repeat several times, mixing well inbetween reheats to pick up the deposits. Rinse out well with water and continue on, takes about 5 minutes in total.

Tried soaking overnight but DH didn't realise and made me a cup of tea with it, never again!

Thank you. I must try it and see.
