What do you do about washing baby clothes?

I was just wondering what most people do about washing baby clothes? The problem is pretty much all our clothes are in darker colours so I never separate out whites and colours. However a lot of the baby clothes are white or at least light coloured. I don't have a huge number of baby clothes in each size so I'm guessing I will need to do laundry frequently but I can't see ever having a full load with just the baby stuff unless I buy loads more clothes. Do I just put on small loads which seems a waste or wash everything together with a colour catcher or napisan and hope the whites stay whiteish?

I've always washed DD's clothes separately and she's nearly 2! I'm not even really sure why now, just that it's easier to keep things separate when it comes to sorting and putting them away.

She didn't have loads of clothes but with muslins, bedding etc it made enough for a load every few days.

I washed my DD's clothes separately until a few months ago for the same reason. She is 3. Luckily if she has a choice of clothing she prefers darker or brighter colours.

With muslin cloths and bedding and the amount of dirty clothes a baby makes you probably won’t be far off a full load anyway!

Sprogonthetyne · 01/07/2022 18:10

I only buy bought brightly coloured baby cloths to avoid this conundrum. Though that's not much use if you already have the cloths.

I just bunged everything in together.

stuntbubbles · 01/07/2022 18:13

Just shove everything in at once and ruin them, life’s too short when you consider babies poo and piss and sick on their clothes and toddlers – at least mine – roll in the dirt and smear ice cream all over themselves. Sure she looks like an urchin but she’s having fun and I’m not spending too much time on washing ¯\(ツ)/¯

devildeepbluesea · 01/07/2022 18:16

I just bunged everything in together and still do: sheets, towels and cleaning cloths too. They’ll be washed for 90 mins in soapy water, I can’t see the point of separate washes

ContadoraExplorer · 01/07/2022 18:20

In with bedding or some lighter tshirts/hoodies that we have. Occasionally, if I don't have a full light load, they get bunged in with darker stuff that I know has been washed enough so it won't stain them.

Colour catchers!

wibblewobbleball · 01/07/2022 19:08

Colour catchers ruined my washing machine! Just do a load every few days - doesn't have to be a full load. Surely if you've only bought a few in each size you did that expecting to have to wash every few days?

Caspianberg · 01/07/2022 19:12

I make white loads up by adding Muslins, face clothes and white towels. Ds always had white muslin on changing mat so it wasn’t cold, and used same large white towels as us. So easy enough to make load.

Also, most washing machines have different settings. Ours does from 2kg-9kg for example

Exactly this.

Hugasauras · 01/07/2022 19:15

I just put everything in together. I only wash things separately if they are new and more prone to run.

glamourousindierockandroll · 01/07/2022 19:23

I always just generally do lights and darks. I don't often have enough for an exclusively white wash. As PP said, make it up with towels and bedding.

squirrelnutkins1 · 01/07/2022 19:25

I do DD's separately. She gets through enough clothes for it not to be a waste lol!
