How do you clean .....

Hi everyone

I'm looking for advice on how to clean what appears to be some sort of algae, from inside the plastic seal that attaches to the bottom of my sliding shower door to stop the water getting out. Clearly water has got inside it, so I've tried squirting bleach in, but I think the bleach is too thick to really get inside it, so it doesn't seem to do the trick, I thought of trying to poke a knife blade it, but I'm scared in case I break the glass. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I've never managed to clean that but you can replace them cheaply from DIY stores. My own one needs replaced because it's as you describe, caused I think by being poorly fitted in the first place (fairly large gap where water can enter). In previous shower screens I've had its not been anywhere near as much of an issue.

Would a pipe cleaner fit?

I take them off and clean them with bleach and a sonic scrubber. Usually you can just pull them off.

You can normally pop the doors off really easily and give it all a good scrub woth qn old toothbrush a couple of times a year.

I pull mine off & soak in a bleach solution for a while in the bath. I hold it down in the water with something heavier so the solution seeps every nook & cranny.

Ages ago I bought a selection of different sized bottles brushes ages so I force a small bottle brush as far as it will go, to get rid of soap algae.
Sometimes I run a knife blade covered in a cloth along anywhere i can get to.
Regular maintenance is key but if everything else fails I would buy a new length of seal from a big DIY superstore , cut it to fit, slide it on & “job done!” Use the old strip as a pattern for the replacement. Use decent sharp scissors or a Stanley knife.

If u can’t get it off, use bleach & a clean/new paint brush to work up a “foam” which can penetrate better.
I do this inside the rubber seal of my washing machine & leave it to penetrate. It’s surprising how much dirt collects in the rubber seal.
Do you ever take the powder drawer out of yr washing machine & scrub that? Lots of maintenance to running a home. Men think the fairies do it! Hahaa.

Thank you all so much, I'll try getting it off first and then if all else fails will replace. I knew you guys would have some ideas.

Thanks for the tips. Didn’t know you could remove them so easily. Mine are getting scrubbed and bleached today!

KangarooKenny · 04/06/2022 07:46

I take mine off and squirt bleach in, and leave it sitting in a pool of bleach in the bath for a bit.
