Issues with smart meters

I'd like to have a smart meter installed to see the specific appliance usage etc, but am nervous that I might end up paying more if it breaks down.

Have you/ someone you know had issues with a smart meter?

Or did you have one for a long time and it's all been perfectly fine?
TIA

Why would it break down?

@DaffodillSky do you have one?
No issues with it?

I've been hearing about ppl having problems and that effecting their bills. Would be interesting to know if it's something that happens often.

Yes, I've got one and I have never had any issues. If you look at it every day at the same sort of time you will be able to tell if it's faulty if it says. £8 and it usually says £3. So it's easier to not pay the wrong amount rather than harder.

I've read this to try and work out what you are worrying about and it seems that a lot of the issues were with the older 'first generation' smart meters.

Does your meter need replacing? Would just unplug anything when you finish needing it to be on. Appliances' energy consumption can be looked up online. It can be greener to not replace the meter before end of life, and be aware of what is switched on at each socket...

They don't actually fully change the meter - the smart meter is essentially an add-on to an existing meter which enables it to communicate.

It won't change the amount you consume - you'll just in real time what it is

They do replace the meters. Don't know if that's always or if it depends on the meter or installation, but all my family and friends had theirs replaced. Gas and electric.
