Astro turf hoovering?

Felt I'd get scorned if I put this in Gardening topic but have moved to a house with a small garden which has astro turf. After a decade of mowing an acre this is bliss and I've no plans to replace.

After a blustery days yesterday it is covered with tiny sticks and pine needles.

What are others using to vacuum their astro turf - just the household Gtech or Henry or something more fit-for-purpose?

I see there are lawnmower style machines which brush the plastic blades as well as vacuum but they are huge and pricey so not for us.

I ignore them. The bits will get blown to the edges of the garden and I just pick them up with my hands.

We had AstroTurf in our old house & occasionally I would use a leaf blower (on suck)

Ruralbliss · 11/05/2022 15:16

Leaf blower on suck how annoying I freecycled away one of those just ahead of moving thinking I wouldn't be needing again!

My daughter insists we need something which brushes the grass blades. I'm telling her no one is due to audit the pristineness of our astro and my budget doesn't stretch to such a machine

Can't you just brush it?

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 11/05/2022 15:19

Whatever you do use- make sure it’s relegated purely for outdoor use.
I speak as someone who hoovered up an animal dropping on the shed.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 11/05/2022 15:20

Argh. IN the shed ——- I was trying to clean up a spilt bag of cat litter.

We have a small strange shaped lawn in the front garden which we replaced with fake grass and I use a stiff brush to brush the debris to the borders - did try a hoover but the stiff brush works better

Aria2015 · 11/05/2022 15:25

We use an old hoover. Brush up the big bits first and then just Hoover. Simples!

SoupDragon · 11/05/2022 15:29

how is hoovering plastic grass any different from mowing actual grass? Obviously size wise it's different but you'll be hoovering it all winter too.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 11/05/2022 15:40

@SoupDragon well lawn needs mowing every week to keep it nice. I’m doing no mow may - 10 days in and I have grass suitable for hay making! Astro turf stays the same length regardless of weather. I suppose you could just spend a few minutes sweeping it clean once a month? Less hassle for elderly/infirm/their family?
Posters on a similar thread advocate it’s no
mud properties.
I go for too long grass personally as I live dandelions. 🤷‍♀️

@SoupDragon well a natural lawn looks horribly unkempt after a week during growing season so needs to be cut by mowing which is a huge undertaking with petrol topping up, pulling the big string until it starts then constantly emptying the grass collector.

With the astro turf the hoovering will wait until I can be arsed and it will be a brief lightweight whiz round with an electric device then done.
