How do you dry your laundry if you don't have a utility or laundry room?

I am fed up of my living room permanently being full of drying laundry. What do you do with yours? Do you tumble dry everything? My problem with that is that it's so difficult to iron after it's been tumble dried. Or do you manage to get it to dry outside even in winter?

Have 2 airers in the conservatory with a dehumidifier on too. Dries the clothes in super quick time.

I have cut down using the dryer, so usually have stuff over the doors in the livingroom and on the radiators. Big sheets over the banisters.

Thinking of getting an airer again as I have a space in my hall but not very warm.

prone to sudden rainstorms here so despite being very windy I don't often risk drying outdoors at this time of year unless I know I can rush out quickly. Instead I dry clothes in the conservatory (which also doubles as dining / living room as it is the biggest room) when I get fed up of seeing the clothes they get moved on the same airer into the bath. Best thing is over the child guard in front of the woodburner - great for jeans.

Our house is made from cob so not the easiest house to dry clothes in but we still manage to get our hemp nappies dry with just a final 10 mins to soften in the washer/drier

What is this ironing of which some of you speak???

wish we had an airing cupboard ...oh and an extra loo

Our airing cupboard hardly deserves the name - it's just the alcove where the hot-water tank is, with some slatted shelves stuck round & over it (and hardboard as a door across the alcove to keep the warmth in). Could you make something similar?

Coby · 12/01/2008 21:19

sadly no, the hot water tank is in the loft so not very accessable. Your airing cupboard sounds like one I used to have, one shelf (which I crammed with all I could )

I dry everything possible in the tumble drier, just stop it before it gets completely dry and iron the dampness out of it or fold it ready to reduce creases. Use tumble drier bounce sheets.
If you have room you could put the airer up in your bedroom and turn radiator up and close the door.

ours has a 'utility room', but it's an old coal shed and 'damp' is too dry to describe it.

so i use the drier.

just pull the clothes out as soon as the drier is finished and you won't need to iron.

i have a clothes airer at the top of the stair with a ring of pegs thing attaced to the side

rarely use tumble drier (except for towels in the winter) unless i have a major backlog

Tumble drier for knickers / boxers /socks.

Airer in spare room for everything else.
