Clean all sufaces to be painted with sugar soap. Put down dust sheet, masking tape on all edges. I would paint the pipes the same colour as the walls to blend them in.

Cappuccino · 09/01/2008 11:24

if they're painted in gloss I'd stick with the same thing

clean it definitely if there are any peeling patches rub them down

give all gloss a quick sand & dust off

Cappuccino · 09/01/2008 11:24

oh comeoveneer I was going to say sugar soap but thought I would be getting poncey

brimfull · 09/01/2008 11:26

doesn't make sense to clean before rubbing down to me

  • wipe down walls, paint work and anything else close by with damp, but not wet, cloth - removes dust and any dirt

  • depending on how careful you are - use low tack masking tape to mask off bits you want t avoid painting - round the sink, toilet cistern, skirting board, etc.

  • then paint

ComeOVeneer · 09/01/2008 11:29

Poncey, that's me alright

Hulababy · 09/01/2008 11:29

I only run down with sandpaper if the walls are obvously in need of smoothing down or if I need to rub away something like excess plaster, or after filling a hole with polyfiller stuff.

I have a painted bathroom and my mate (who knows these things) suggested that Dulux Quick Drying Eggshell is the best for the job. It is suitable for all surfaces. I painted the outside of a cast iron bath with it. and it's waterbased so no awful clean up with white spirit, you just wash it out with water.

It's pricy but he is right. The bathroom has lasted for 7 years and has life left in it too.

Tips and orders

Rub Down the surfaces

Clean surfaces with a good sugar soap solution. It gets rid of grease and grime and gives a good base for painting

Apply the paint

I suggest you get more paint than you need so you can touch up chips/knock quickly and easily.

open a can of beer

ComeOVeneer · 09/01/2008 11:30

Unless there is any peeling paint I only clean I don't bother to rub down.

brimfull · 09/01/2008 11:31

Right

coffee's finished

thanks for all your tips,

am going in

wish me luck

and I think I have eggshell!
